I have the same problem with intrepid, i have syncmaster 793DF and kde applies the resolution (1280x1024) only for the current session as shown in attachment, after restart it reverts back to 1024x768. I too see this problem in dapper. My setup is an Inspiron E1705 w/ 1920x1200 panel plus external 1280x1024 LCD monitor. X is always reset to 1280x1024 on my laptop panel after logging in with kdm. Resizing it in system settings works for the current session, but the resolution is forgotten the next time I log in via kdm. I can't for the life of me figure out where this is getting set.
