In Karmic I can't see an ALSA Mixer - I'm assuming that it's still
there?  Will try installing ALSA Utils to see if that will work.

I tried installing gnome ALSA mixer but that doesn't seem to help - All
my levels are fine - it's more a relative volume - if i'm playing audio
and playing gnometris the audio is louder than the effects.  I think
this is more likely related to gnometris not supporting Pulse Audio.  I
would suggest creating a pulse audio connection or object at when
gnometris starts?  This way the relative volume can be set.

I wonder if it's something simple to achieve?  I might even have a look
at the source...

changing the volume with alsamixer doesn't fix the issue either?
