If you want to file a backports request, say so. But I don't think it is going to happen since you are talking about changing a package in main. I don't much see the advantage to going back and changing it to use pcmciautils since it apparently works on Dapper. But is there any loss of functionality or any real problem with it? Deprecated means it shouldn't be used in anything new, but it remains usable. Make an argument for replacing a working system in an already released operating system. Especially one that is part of every single Ubuntu install.
