[Bug 525756] Re: Aspire 5315-2713 overheats shuts down using Ubuntu 9.10

2010-04-26 Thread Jeremy Foshee
Hi christopher,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release
of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the
following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It
will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 525756

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

2010-04-23 Thread silvan
I also have an travelmate 5315 that shuts down suddenly every now and then. The
fan seems to work fine. Infact it is spinning continuous. The notebook starts
to react slow and just powers off.
I opened the laptop and replaced the thermal compound but it didn't fix the
problem.
Under system profiler, the TZ01 sensor reads 99 degrees celcius, but the status
can only updated after reboot. After the reboot, the notebook functions fine
for a while.

2010-03-23 Thread Dezemerel
Hi Again,

I have performed an update of the laptops bios (to version 1.45), and the
trouble seems to be fixed.

Hopefully this info could be useful to someone.

Kind regards,

[Bug 525756] Re: Aspire 5315-2713 overheats shuts down using Ubuntu 9.10

2010-03-21 Thread Dezemerel
Hi

Im also affected by this bug.

I think this could be a Kernel bug, because I have done some tests in
Debian.

The laptop would work fine if started from a older kernel, however, if a
relatively new kernel is selected in the grub boot menu, the fan will
not work correctly.

Also I have found a workaround to this issue, but its a very bad one:
let the computer overheat (!!) until it shutdowns, and then turn it on
immediately. The fan will remain set at 100% speed, so it wont overheat
again.

This makes me believe that maybe the issue is that the computer
temperature / fan speed is fixed at boot, so if the temperature at boot
is cool, the fan wont be turned on, and if the temperature at boot is
hot, the fan will be set to run at 100% until the system is halted.

Sorry for my bad english, and for not providing more data. If there is
anything I could add, please let me know.

[Bug 525756] Re: Aspire 5315-2713 overheats shuts down using Ubuntu 9.10

2010-02-27 Thread Pere Ubu
I have the same problem and it is a SEVERE SHOWSTOPPER!!:

I had Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my Acer 5315 laptop. The cooling fan
didn't start so after 10-15 min. the laptop overheats and shut down.

Is it an Ubuntu issue or a Debian issue? Or is it a kernel issue that will
affect every distro???
For your information, I have tried Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, Linux Mint 8 and Sidux
2009-4 without any luck.

Running Debian Lenny, Linux Mint 6 or Ubuntu 8.10 and it is working
fine.

Here's some info on my laptop:

[Bug 525756] Re: Aspire 5315-2713 overheats shuts down using Ubuntu 9.10

2010-02-23 Thread christopher
It's February 23, 2010 at 10:26 am
I recently updated Ubuntu 9.10 with the latest updates. The overheating
problems continues to persist. It seems that no amount of Updates will fix the
problem. I'm unable to review Ubuntu 9.10 because of overheating then shut
downs.

When I turn on computer and go to Bios, (fans work normally.)
When I turn on computer and go to Boot Manager, (fans work normally)

I then select which operating system to boot up.
When I select Ubuntu 9.10 or the external hard drive where Ubuntu 9.10 and the
Grub is housed,
THE FANS TURN OFF AND STAY OFF FOR THE DURATION.
I ACTUALLY HEARD THE FAN TURN OFF.
WITH MY BARE HAND, I FEEL THE COMPUTER HEATING UP RIGHT WHERE THE TOUCH PAD IS!

This puzzles me because how was I able to install the Operating System Ubuntu
9.10 complete without the computer overheating and shutting down? Is this
because the Operating System hadn't taken over yet?
This suggest to me that the problem is in the Source Code. Something in the
Source Code for Ubunto 9.10 had to be completely overlooked or just plain left
out. It could be that the order in which the information is lined up was
altered when the change happened from 8.10 to 9.04 then the same problem was
carried over to 9.10.

As I said before, at one point Ubuntu 9.10 did, in fact, work (fan forking) but
something else was wrong: THE MOUSE PAD AND THE EXTERNAL MOUSE HAD A DELAYED
REACTION. Also I was no longer able to flip the Cube with the wheel on the
mouse.
I'm not sure what the pair of Keys were on the task bar, That is still a
mystery.

(Ubuntu 8.10 is flawless and work without a glitch. The computer works
normally. Fans work normally.) I'm able to review and learn about Linux.
I enjoy working with Ubuntu 8.10. It responds quickly. It's easy to
navigate. It's even user friendly. Seldom do I need to look up
information to get 8.10 to do anything. Updates are easy. Useful
software is only a click away and they are always the complete versions.

Windows Vista (As hard as it is to admit this) lol, is flawless and
works without a glitch. (OF COURSE I HAD TO MAKE SOME MINOR CHANGES FOR
THE OPERATING SYSTEM TO FUNCTION PROPERLY FOR ME.

At this time, Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 are unstable, I cannot suggest anyone
use these Operating Systems. If you take the chance, (DO SO AT YOUR OWN
RISK) (WARNING: MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, AS SOON AS 9.04 OR 9.10 OPERATING
SYSTEM TAKE CONTROL, YOUR FANS WILL TURN OFF)

You only have about fifteen to twenty minutes before your computer
overheats then shuts down. I suggest you only use Ubuntu 8.10 if you
want a true representation of what Ubuntu can do and do it well.

There has been no fix for 9.04 or 9.10 which works (that I'm aware of).
If the overheating happens one time, IMMEDIATELY DOWNGRADE TO UBUNTU
8.10. Keep it up to date and your PC should work fine.
