[Bug 528326] Re: Sync libsynthesis 3.2.0.35+ds2-2 from debian sid

2010-04-20 Thread Pietro Battiston
The current situation is bad:
1) syncevolution doesn't work
2) if I patch the current version with the linked patch _and_ delete the
UbuntuOne addressbook, it works
3) if I install 1.0, it works

Please decide what to do. If you find 2) is the most acceptable
solution, I will provide a debdiff in a matter of hours.

[Bug 528326] Re: Sync libsynthesis 3.2.0.35+ds2-2 from debian sid

2010-04-20 Thread Daniel T Chen
Given that the current version of syncevolution doesn't work and that
universe packages in 10.04 LTS are supportable for three years on the
desktop, it makes sense to sync from testing instead of carrying a patch
that also requires the user to delete her/his UO addressbook.

This is a sync request for libsynthesis, which was done; please don't
overload this bug task for other issues.

syncevolution is being synced from testing now.

[Bug 528326] Re: Sync libsynthesis 3.2.0.35+ds2-2 from debian sid

2010-03-23 Thread Pietro Battiston
I have been experimenting with several combinations of syncevolution and
libsynthesis, and unfortunately I found that syncevolution 0.9.1+ds1-1
currently doesn't work in combination with _any_ libsynthesis version,
triggering the bug described at 2) in my first comment: evolution-data-
server at 100% of CPU, and nothing happens. The bug had disappeared in
some upgrade of evolution-data-server, but later was reintroduced, and
now happens _always_. That's why I wasn't able so far to test the
specific compatibility of the new libsynthesis with the current
syncevolution.

Instead, syncevolution 1.0+ds1~beta2a, which is in sid since 15 days
(stopped from migrating to testing only by architectures not supported
by Ubuntu and dependencies already present in Lucid) works perfectly in
my (massive) tests.

Now: 1.0 _does_ introduce new features - namely, the ability of syncing
without a third-party server - but I think it is still by far the best
way to solve the current problem.

Obviously, it _may_ be that at some point before the release of Lucid I
upgrade evolution-data-server again and everything works again... but I
have no clue on that.

That said: assuming that the request to sync 1.0+ds1~beta2a is _not_
accepted, and assuming that the 100% CPU bug is somehow solved, the
upstream developers (who don't use lucid and _don't see_ the 100% CPU
bug) have said that the current syncevolution and libsynthesis are
_probably_ compatible apart from one particular problem - in brief,
after one applies the patch at

[Bug 528326] Re: Sync libsynthesis 3.2.0.35+ds2-2 from debian sid

2010-03-08 Thread Pietro Battiston
AHEM... what you synced is apparently not 3.2.0.35+ds2-2 , which was the
most recent present in Debian unstable when I filed this request, but
3.4.0.5+ds1-1 , which is in unstable since just 2 days.

I may ask to upstream and debian maintainer if 3.4.0.5+ds1-1 is
acceptable with the currently available version of syncevolution (and I
think the answer would be positive), but I won't if, as I imagine, after
you read this you will immediately revert the sync to 3.2.0.35+ds2-2 (in
case the information could prove useful, that version migrated to
testing 3 days ago).

If instead you decide to keep the currently synced version - which, by
the way, could incidentally solve the problem with Ubuntu One mentioned
in the first of my comments - I will obviously test it and try to ensure
all is fine.

It's too late. We can't go back to 3.2.0.35+ds2-2 easily. If there are
no grave issues with the new version, we will stay with 3.4.0.5+ds1-1.

Sorry, it's not possible to revert a package sync; the only thing that
can be done from here is to do a new upload of the previous upstream
version with an artificially higher version number. Please investigate
whether 3.4.0.5 is ok for us, and let us know if it wlll be a problem.

[Bug 528326] Re: Sync libsynthesis 3.2.0.35+ds2-2 from debian sid

2010-03-01 Thread Pietro Battiston
Hello,

the benefits of the release are:
- the linked bug, which it fixes, was (is) cause of data corruption!
- other refinements and bugfixes have been made by the developers

the risk of regressions is quite limited, because:
- syncevolution and the relative libraries are tipically high quality and
tested code, as can be deduced for instance from the very low number of bugs
present in Debian and Ubuntu (compared with the increasing popcon)
- the debian package is out since one month and a half and in unstable since
two weeks - in other words, it was presumably tested much more than some
packages that enter Ubuntu automatically
- the debian maintainer and the upstream developers are very responsive, and
I'm in contact with both
- in any case, the most important feature added - namely, the ability for
syncevolution to act as a syncml server - was only made available in 1.0, which
will certainly not enter Lucid. So the current syncevolution configuration is
anyway quite conservative.
- by the way, syncevolution (with sync-ui) is the only rdepend of libsynthesis

That said, it must be noticed that the package _is having_ some problems
in lucid, but they are not regressions:

1) it doesn't play well with the Ubuntu One contacts: this is known
upstream, but I think it's to late for the fix to enter lucid. This is
not a regression of syncevolution, though the fact that now (or maybe
even in Karmic? sorry, I ignore) Ubuntu One holds contacts by default
makes the worsen the issue.

2) in a vast percentage of tests, syncevolution hangs with evolution-
data-server using all the available CPU: this is very unfortunate, but
it happens with the current version of syncevolution as well, and hence
seems to be a problem on the evolution side: I will anyway keep testing
that and try to isolate the problem.
