What's the reason for the Won't Fix status here? This is extremely unexpected and annoying behavior. Stealing existing user shortcuts and making them not configurable is unacceptable. Just because some Dell/HP laptops have a certain behavior is not a valid reason for having one of your most heavily used shortcuts in your IDE do something else all of a sudden. Again, the super+p keybinding is broken for all user applications when running gnone-settings-daemon, and the option to fix the problem is not discoverable (and may have other side effects). I disabled all the keybindings in gnome-keybinding-properties and performed various other hair-pulling before discovering the cause was this fix. I use Super+P for switching windows, and the fix here broke that. Sakumatti Luukkonen: I had a similar problem -- I use Super+p frequently as a custom keyboard binding (switching workspaces). Since my latest apt-get upgrade this resulted in screen flicker or unwanted resolution changes, as well as preventing the keypress from reaching my window manager. Thanks for helping me narrow down the issue to gnome-settings- daemon! I found the following workaround. Using gconf-editor, find the following conf key: /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/xrandr/active And set it to false (not checked). The change should be effective immediately after the edit. This may disable other useful behavior, but I haven't personally noticed any ill effects. And another heads up, I have a Dell Studio 1558 and use Gnome with Gnome-Do. I couple of days ago I connected an external monitor for the first time and maybe also tried Fn+F1 to activate the VGA port. After doing that (and rebooting various times) Super+P does not launch Gnome-Do anymore as I configured it before but only removes my mouse arrow for parts of a second. If start Gnome-Do through the menu, change the key to start Gnome-Do to e.g. to Super+J, close Gnome-Do, reopen and configure it back to Super+P it works again. When I then use Fn+F1 it also opens Gnome-Do. Just a heads up, I use Xmonad as the Gnome window manager and this patch somewhat broke Xmonad for me. Xmonad, by default, uses a combination of Mod+p (what Mod is is configurable, in my case I've set it to the Super_L) to open the Gnome run dialog. So after getting the latest updates, pressing Super+p just flashes the screen briefly and does not open the Gnome run application dialog, as it did before. I assume that this is the new assumed behavior, related to video modes. This machine is _not_ a Dell or a HP laptop. It's a self-built desktop with Asus P5Q, Intel Q9550, Nvidia GTX 260 using the Nvidia proprietary drivers. So is there any way to disable this new behavior, or is it really hard- coded to gnome-settings-daemon? The upstream patches are rather intrusive, they aren't really appropriate for SRUing. Mike's patch looks more suitable for an SRU. Has this ever been tested on the maverick package? gnome-settings-daemon 2.32.0-0ubuntu3.1~test1 from your PPA works fine on my Dell Latitude E6400 (BIOS version A20, which is not the latest one available) with Maverick. It is not at all clear that it intends that the BIOS should _send_ the Win-P key. It cirtainly does not recommend that they send a return sometime later to accept the dialog? For the record, my Dell Studio 1558 (BIOS version A04) does not behave exactly as described in comment #39... I find that if I press the video out key just once (or if I press it multiple times, but wait at least a few seconds between each press) then I never get the weird injected Enter after the Super + P sequence. (In a terminal window, this just looks like I've typed a lower-case 'p'). However, if I press the video out key more than once in quick succession, then about 0.5 seconds after I stop pressing it I do get a single injected Enter. (In grub I hit e, entered acpi_osi=\!Windows 2009\ into the last line and started ubuntu with Strg+x) In Ubuntu the Video out hot key produces the letter p in Applications like Open Office and MS Office 2007. Using acpi_osi=Windows 2006 may address this issue, but I've already seen one BIOS that this fails on, so it's not a generic solution. Using acpi_osi=\!Windows 2009\ maybe better temporary workaround for now, but it will fail when the kernel gets upgraded and includes the names of newer Windows. It's going to turn out very ugly if we carry on using this method of disabling this Windows 7 feature in the BIOS. I've looked at a couple of DSDT tables and found that when Windows 7 is matched in the ACPI _OSI() method the embedded controller is tweaked to enable this Windows 7 feature to emit the key sequence. I see the sequence in comment 3. @Michael Windows waits for a release of the Super key to show the start menu, allowing other combinations to work. One interesting issue that I don't think has been mentioned is that mutter grabs and blocks the use of the Super key. So in mutter, my patch won't work. And any attempt to share Super key will fail. Specifically, mutter's default value for /apps/mutter/general/overlay_key is Super_L. Mutter grabs this key and won't let go (so g-s-d never sees press). The overlay_key is not used directly by mutter, but does get passed along to gnome-shell which uses it for something (presumably to pull down its HUD/overlay? I haven't used it yet). So, mutter needs to use a different key if we fix this bug. Chris, regarding your statement about g-s-d being the wrong place, I initially tended to agree. But after talking with pitti, it appears the Linux input stack is not meant to be able to 'merge' keypresses like Super_L+p into a different press. It's only really good at translating one press into another. So the ideal solution (udev mapping) seems not workable. So we have to do it in desktop-space. Then, my gut reaction is to add an entry to the GNOME Keybindings screen that defaults to Mod4+p for switching video mode, because hardcoding a keybinding in g-s-d that normally would be available for users to use seems bad. But... this is a BIOS hardcoded key press. Allowing the user to change 'video-switch' to a different key would just be letting the user break their 'display' keyboard key. Seems like it should be at least as hardcoded as the previous VIDEOSWITCHMODE presses were.
