Is this still an issue for you? We are trying to trying sort out the older Mozilla issues and would like to know if this still happens. I am still unable to reproduce this on edgy nor feisty. The attached image shows a message with big attachment while thunderbird is downloading it. Only after it's downloaded (which takes a few minutes) you see its contents, including the attachments list. It happens with the mozilla-thunderbird I use now but I'm not sure if it's the version that you asked about.
