Can confirm the bug: cancelling fsck results in the error described in the bug 
report.
Had to restart the computer and allow fsck to complete in order to get some 
work done.

Running the same versions, but on a 64 bit system.
uname -a:
Linux ubuntu-pc 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:28:05 UTC 2010 
x86_64 GNU/Linux
