Same problem here with the most recent mainline kernel 3.1.4 for oneiric ocelot (11.10). I do have the same initial problem. The pause in 7-18 seconds. I tried to disable usb support by appending nousb to the kernel line in the grub boot menu by pressing e. However this doesn't do the trick for me. Can you confirm that. I can confirm this on my desktop computer (can't add dmesg as I'm currently on my laptop, which seems to work just fine). 1) dmesg shows some huge gaps and 2) when GDM shows, it hangs a long time (20seconds+) where neither mouse nor keyboard are responding - however, all keypresses/mousemovements are handled after the hang 3) after I enter my password, the login is rather slow, but this could also relate to the lots of stuff running on my desktop/server ;-) As I'm running multiple services (mysql, openssh, apache, mythtv- backend), I thought it might be related to one of those... or the combination of them, but since noone here mentioned one of these, its probably not the case. I'm having a very similar problem to what is being described here. Another side effect I'm seeing is a huge wait time between the Login Screen and finally getting to the desktop. So I click my User, 20 second pause, I type my password, 2 minute pause or more then I get to my desktop. I'm unsure if these two problems are related. Now to be honest, I've been doing some development playing with the FTDI FT232RL USB to Serial, so perhaps something with this broke my system. I have been using Lucid for a couple of weeks now and the boot times have been very quick, but just today it refused to boot or was booting so slow that I lost patience. It happened two or three times in a row, never coming up. So I booted into recovery mode, did a sudo shutdown -h now at the prompt and it booted up fine the next time -- although perhaps a little slowly. I would not be surprised if this had something to do with usb, as Ubuntu does NOT have usb figured out yet. A quick search will reveal many people having freezing issues, generally with a usb mouse. (The solution was to plug the mouse into and external hub. Why this works I don't know.) Are the two related? They are certainly both usb issues. And to be fair to Ubuntu: Linux doesn't seem to have usb down in general. I'm under a Acer Laptop. I have it slowing boot over 2 minutes.
