What model is your Nikon Coolpix? According to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgphoto2 Karmic uses libgphoto2 2.4.6. The only Nikon Coolpix models added in libgphoto2 2.4.8 (used in Lucid) were the S220 and S225. None were added in 2.4.7. If you have a Nikon Coolpix 8800, P6000, L20 or L19 these were not added until libgphoto2 2.4.9, although this would not explain why they worked on Karmic. The other change in libgphoto2 2.4.9 is Fixed a Nikon Coolpix configuration bug that caused hangs., but you are not getting a hang, you just can't mount the camera. Hmm, interesting. I have the S220, I just checked.
