2010-05-30 Thread Riccardo Poli
Hi again,

On Sat, 2010-05-29 at 21:19 +0100, Stenten wrote:

 Suspend from the shutdown menu?

See my previous message. One thing: it is now clear that the problem
does really occur at every other suspend/resume.

 2) Try disabling Desktop Effects and recreating.

This did not help.

 3) Try removing your xorg.conf and recreating. sudo mv
/etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak. If you need to restore it,
run sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If for some
reason you don't get a desktop without xorg.conf, you can boot into
recovery mode and select root to get a command line, and then run the
restore commands.

This did not help

 4) Try reproducing on the current mainline kernel [1]. Download and install
the _all headers, amd64 headers, and amd64 image. You can revert by holding
down Shift during boot and selecting the 32-22 kernel and then removing the
three packages in Synaptic (search 2.6.34).

This worked! I have now suspended and resumed both via lid-close/open
and power button several times without a problem.

Hibernate still does not work, but I guess I should submit this as a
different bug.

Many thanks for your help.

Riccardo

[Bug 587136] Re: [gm45] Resume failure in Toshiba Satellite U400 (Backtrace included)

2010-05-29 Thread Stenten
Does the CapsLock light work after you resume?

First enable Apport
sudo service apport start force_start=1
Then please recreate the issue and then enter a TTY by typing Ctrl+Alt+F1.
Login, and then create these two log files:
cat /var/log/dmesg dmesg_crash.txt
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log_crash.txt
Then try to restart X by killing it and restarting:
sudo service gdm stop
startx
Note any error messages. Then attach the two files you created. They should be
in your home folder.

Re: [Bug 587136] Re: [gm45] Resume failure in Toshiba Satellite U400 (Backtrace included)

2010-05-29 Thread Riccardo Poli
On Sat, 2010-05-29 at 21:05 +0100, Stenten wrote:

Firstly, the problem does not occur every time I suspend/resume (perhaps
every other time or there about). Secondly, when it happens the CapsLock
light does not work.

 First enable Apport
 sudo service apport start force_start=1
Then please recreate the issue and then enter a TTY by typing Ctrl+Alt+F1.

I started apport but could not switch TTY.

Login, and then create these two log files:
 cat /var/log/dmesg dmesg_crash.txt
 cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log_crash.txt

I've done this, but I had to switch off the machine completely and
reboot.

I noticed something I had not noticed before. When the machine reboots
after a failed resume, the networking is switched off (in network
manager), which I found to be odd.

Then try to restart X by killing it and restarting:
 sudo service gdm stop
 startx

I could not test this for the reasons above.

Note any error messages. Then attach the two files you created. They should
 be in your home folder.

I attach the files. I did not get any other error message.

Many thanks

Riccardo

Re: [Bug 587136] Re: [gm45] Resume failure in Toshiba Satellite U400 (Backtrace included)

2010-05-29 Thread Riccardo Poli
Hi,

Cannot test these all now, but I've tried the suspend on lid close.
Again it worked fine first time (i.e., it suspended and then resumed
correctly when I opened the lid). However, the second time, the lid open
produced a reboot.

I'll test other things tomorrow morning.

Many thanks

Riccardo
