I have the same problem In my eMachines E725 with Maverick, Natty and Oneiric. (with officials kernels, latest versions of xserver-xorg-video- intel, libmesa and libdrm). And with the Vesa mode (without 3D) is'nt possible to use Gnome 3. I'm happy to present working solution for integrated Intel HD Graphics (GMA HD) running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS: 1. Install new versions of libdrm*, lib*mesa* and xserver-xorg-video-intel packages from ppa:ubuntu-fi or ppa:baltix (see https://launchpad.net/~baltix/+archive ) repository 2. Install new Linux kernel 2.6.38 image (linux-image-generic-lts-backport-natty) from ppa:baltix-members (see https://launchpad.net/~baltix-members/+archive ) or ppa:kernel-ppa 3. restart Ubuntu 10.04 operating system :) I've updated xserver-xorg-video-intel and libdrm* packages from these repositories and can confirm that this solution fixed *all* video driver problems on my Dell Latitude E5520 notebook with Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU and integrated Intel HD Graphics second generation (VGA controller: Intel Corporation Device 0116 (rev 09) )! ** Description changed: The new Intel processors have the graphics card integrated on themselves. As it turns out, current stable ubutnu (10.04) with all updates applied cannot boot with this graphics adapter,. The only working solution as of now is to: set Xorg driver to vesa and pass i915.modeset=0 parameter to kernel in grub. It is possible to use x-updates ppa to get newer intel driver, which allows to use external monitor, however, if one doesn't connect external monitor to the computer, the system won't boot. So, the workaround is the only solution for a notebook at the moment Seems that a newer kernel (branch 2.6.33 at minimum) and new intel driver are both needed to get this work properly. The current Maverick Meerkat alpha fails to boot as well. I found a bug on LP related to this, but reported only with new MacBooks and it's connected with ATI driver. I think that this bug probably affects all notebooks which use Core i5 and it's integrated graphics chip. This is resolved for natty (although see bug #745112; it still has trouble with 4096 wide total screen width). Same problem since I install the proprietary driver ATI/AMD for graphic card FGLRX. I remove it but this problem stays. I can add more info, seems my problem is related to dual graphics, I have an integrated intel card and a ati card and I cannot switch off thru the BIOS. Have the same problem, plus whenever I try to use an external monitor, it refuses to display correctly, I get all sorts of wavy lines, like the refresh rate is off. Same Problem here with an MSI X360 Intel i5 Book. Maverick 2.6.35-22-generic Same message, Compiz works flawlessly, HDMI withound Problems, Display without Problems... But it seems to be always the same... Everytime i got an Intel Book, the Graphicboars dont seem to work without problem... Its always the same thing with this damn Intel cards ! Same problem here, I'm using a LATITUDE E6510, with intel core i5. With 10.10, I have the failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled. message and then a blank screen. However I have a weird workaround for that : I noticed that when I plug an external screen on the VGA port of my dock station, the display starts working perfectly. Laptop : Thinkpad T410, Intel core i5 520 M. With a Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS, 2.6.32.15 from package (linux- source-2.6.32_2.6.32-24.43_all), there is no problem, no warnings at boot time. With a Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS, 2.6.36 from kernel.org, at boot time, kernel warns: failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled.. Hi there, I have the same bug - Ubuntu 10.10 shows me the message during the start sequence : failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled. Another problem is, that I can't use desktop effects although I have installed the Ati driver and compiz. When I remove the driver the message disappears. But one thing is always there: The fan of the graphic card is running at 100 % all the time! and the CPU Usage of the 4 Cores is sometimes at 100 % , you can see it in the attachment. Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: The new Intel processors have the graphics card integrated on themselves. As it turns out, current stable ubutnu (10.04) with all updates applied cannot boot with this graphics adapter,. The only working solution as of now is to: set Xorg driver to vesa and pass i915.modeset=0 parameter to kernel in grub. It is possible to use x-updates ppa to get newer intel driver, which allows to use external monitor, however, if one doesn't connect external monitor to the computer, the system won't boot. So, the workaround is the only solution for a notebook at the moment Seems that a newer kernel (branch 2.6.33 at minimum) and new intel driver are both needed to get this work properly. The current Maverick Meerkat alpha fails to boot as well. I found a bug on LP related to this, but reported only with new MacBooks and it's connected with ATI driver. I think that this bug probably affects all notebooks which use Core i5 and it's integrated graphics chip. Confirmed on 2 different Lenovo models and a Dell laptop. It now also works for me (HP Elitebook 8440p). I still had an xorg.conf file on my system because a few months ago I had to set the parameters manually because the xorg driver did not work back then. I am still experiencing this problem unable to get X to run without passing i915.modeset=0 and using the vesa driver. Intel driver won't run regardless of what I do. Running maverick with latest packages on an HP TM2 with core i3/Intel HD graphics. Hi, i am relatively new in Ubuntu, and I got a brand new machine, Lenovo core i5. I want to replace fully Windows 7 but it has been a headache to install Ubuntu due to this issue. Although I am running right now Ubuntu, the video resolution is poor. I experience this problem on a Lenovo v360-0911B3S, (core i5 with intel integrated graphics. 3GB RAM, 500GB HDD). I tried Ubuntu 10.04 and the beta version of 10.10, still the same problem. Temporally I could start the video in 1)VESA in the Xorg driver, and 2)passing in the kernel parameter nomodeset each time I boot my computer. It allows me a resolution of 1024x768, in basic mode (I mean, no extras in video effects). I tried to install intel driver (xserver-xorg-video-intel) with all updated versions, but problem remains. Same problem here with similar card [1]. Intel driver freezes (or at least blank the screen) with xorg-edges versions and kernel 2.6.36-rc2. nomodeset is the only solution.
