I confirm that with Natty 11.04 the internal microphone works without workarounds on my Dell E4310. Great. After upgrading to Natty I restested this issue. With the fixes in place listed above the microphone worked but dock audio did not work. If I remove the options snd-hda-intel model=dell-s14 line and remove the startup script the sound card works exactly as intended, microphone and dock switching. Actually I tested disabling the workaround from comment #12 and the audio output from the dock doesn't work without it either. Thanks Jeremy, I tested with 2.6.35-020635rc1-generic (lucid build) and the same problem exists. No combination of volume, or input selection yields sound coming into the microphone. One thing to note is that the headphone jack on this laptop is a combined headphone/microphone jack.
