This was solved in my case with the 2.6.32-24.41 update. Yep same experience here using kernel linux-image-2.6.32-24-server amd64. I've had the same experience. See my post in bug 605551 which seems to be a duplicate. Also see bug 5954897, where it looks like the 2-6-35 kernel has the same bug. Same behavior on my machine, Intel Q6600 running 10.04.1 LTS x86_64 with linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic version 2.6.32-24.38.
