[Bug 605967] Re: System freezes when battery powered

2012-09-28 Thread Thomas Lenarz
** Tags added: apport-collected precise

** Description changed:

Laptop ASUS X51R freezes when battery powered with Ubuntu 10.04

  No problems when AC powered.

Two scenarios to reproduce the problem:

  a)

  1. Boot up Ubuntu with AC supply disconnected but battery powered.
  2. Ubuntu will freeze somewhere during boot process before login screen is
displayed. I think it happens around the time X is started. In most cases get
fancy patterns displayed on screen, more rarely screen stays blank.

  b)

  1. Boot up Ubuntu with AC supply connected.
  2. Logon to the system.
  3. Gnome Desktop is displayed.
  4. Pull the plug of AC.
  5. It takes about 1 or 2 seconds. Screen freezes.

Laptop is more or less useless for me without the possibility of using
  it battery powered.

I am a quite experienced C/C++/Java application programmer, but know few
to nothing about system programming. However you could come back to me
and guide me in which logs to look or what to do to trace down the
  problem.

  Thanks
  Thomas

[Bug 605967] Re: System freezes when battery powered

2012-07-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Thomas Lenarz, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please capture the oops following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs
? As well, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available? It
will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the
kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on
which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not
boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment
as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 605967] Re: System freezes when battery powered

2010-10-27 Thread Nikunj
Very similar to the problem posted, but my system was just fine when
using 10.04. it was only when I updated to 10.10 that the freezes
started.

There is a forum thread with a number of people who have the same problem
describing their hardware. the URL is
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10029746#post10029746
.

The logs dont show anything useful. From my observation the freeze
strikes wheneven on battery and any power related activity occurs, like
insertion of USB drive, switching on wi-fi etc.

once the Wi-Fi network is started. I can do nothing except hard
shutdown.

[Bug 605967] Re: System freezes when battery powered

2010-10-18 Thread Santiago Garcia Pimentel R.G.
Apparently the problem still exists in maverick. There are several
people talking about it in the forums:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1595196

I am also experiencing freezes on 10.10 when running on battery. With
10.04 I never had that problem. The problem started the same day I
upgraded so I don't think is a hardware issue.

I cannot see any error on the logs. The computer just freezes and won't
even respond to a REISUB. The freezes are very random, from just a few
seconds after logging in to several hours

I do get many of these (1 each 5 seconds)
Oct 19 02:19:10 ubuntu kernel: [ 9147.643059] intel ips :00:1f.6: CPU power

[Bug 605967] Re: System freezes when battery powered

2010-10-01 Thread Thomas Lenarz
I just came across to see that there is a ubuntu-package for the
proprietary-graphics-driver fglrx available. I gave it a try. The
problem seems to occur less with this driver than with the open source
radeon-driver. I got the system booted up with battery-power. And it
generally worked fine disconnecting and reconnecting the AC-supply.

However, once the system froze as well on disconnecting the AC-adaptor.

All the Best,
Thomas
