Is it ok for simple mortals like us to close this bug as fixed? I'll
just go ahead anyway. If we're not supposed to, we wouldn't be allowed
to, right?

[Bug 62116] Re: Firefox / Can't Import Bookmarks

2006-10-12 Thread Stephen Wilson
Well, it IS definitely fixed with the full FF 2.0 release that was
recently downloaded through an update. Whether it was fixed upstream or
by Canonical, I'm not sure. I don't see the ability to mark it as fixed,
but I'm not a subscriber to the bug like you are. So, if you have an
option to mark it fixed in the Launchpad menu, then I think it is safe
to assume that you're allow to. Anyway, if you're not, I'm sure they'd
tell you.

Your argument is very persuasive, Ralf. Philosophically, I'm not
convinced that we should be looking at Egdy from a new user perspective
as much as we did Dapper. In reality, I'm finding Edgy more usable and
with fewer breakages that I experienced with Dapper.

Perhaps I'll suggest it in a launchpad wishlist. There really should be such a
thing.
Anyway, the new classification I suggest is FIXED.

[Bug 62116] Re: Firefox / Can't Import Bookmarks

2006-10-09 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
Same here. I think the importance should be critical or high at least,
since it doesn't allow for a clean install of Ubuntu without loosing all
your favorites.

How else do you get your bookmarks into there? It means most users will
download and install firefox manually and disregard the effort of
bundling the browser with the operating system and all the integration
work that comes with that.

It not an occasional crash or something: its a show-stopper.

Probably should be as when they actually release
6.10, and this isn't fixed, their gonna get a lot
of complaints.

since it doesn't allow for a clean install of
Ubuntu without loosing all your favorites.

I suspect your referring to an upgrade here rather
then a clean install. FWIW I use two applications
before installing any OS. They are:

http://www.killdisk.com

I kill the entire disk or at least the front end
sectors and tracks before doing any install.

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

I create the (ext3) partitions first before loading
the Live-CD then committing to the install. This process
makes sure that I am dealing with a clean and completely
empty drive. I never ever do an upgrade.

It means most users will download and install firefox
manually and disregard the effort of bundling the browser
with the operating system and all the integration work
 that comes with that.

This is true.

How else do you get your bookmarks into there?

If you look down through the .mozilla hidden
directory you'll find the working bookmarks.html
file in there. You can edit that directly to
add or remove bookmarks. But, that's a pretty
horrible way to have to deal with this.

It not an occasional crash or something: its a show-stopper.

I've found another Mozilla bug that's pretty serious
and that has to do with the way Seamonkey handles Java
and Flash plugins. In a Mandriva 2007 install you have
a default Firefox and Epiphany install. You put the
Flash and Java plugins in:

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

and that works just fine for both of those Browsers. You
then install the latest version of Seamonkey and you
would expect it to pick up those plugins correctly, it does
not. In fact if Seamonkey encounters a website with either
Java or Flash it crashes. I believe the same thing happens
on Ubuntu 6.10.

I am still in the middle of testing the recently released Mandriva 2007
and have not got back to test these mozilla wrinkles again.

FWIW Edgy Eft is looking really good.

[Bug 62116] Re: Firefox / Can't Import Bookmarks

2006-10-09 Thread Daniel Robitaille
A critical bug is A bug which has a severe impact on a large portion of
Ubuntu users (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/CommonTasks).

Not being able to import firefox bookmarks is very annoying in some
situations, but in my personal opinion doesn't rate critical; critical
are bugs like X doesn't work for all users or filesystem continously
corrupt files or passwords are found in cleartext in a a file on
disk.

This bug report is currently rated medium, which seems about right
looking at the descriptions on that wiki page.

Although I found this bug annoying, it should not be classifies as
critical. Even medium level of criticality is pushing it in my
opinion. I might add that, in terms of a workaround, copying my backup
bookmark HTML file into my new Firefox profile did not work for me.

[Bug 62116] Re: Firefox / Can't Import Bookmarks

2006-10-09 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
Workaround:
 - download firefox2-release-candidate
 - unpack right on your desktop
 - close all running instances of firefox
 - start the firefox shell script in the unpacked firefox-directory
 - import bookmarks
 - close all running instances of firefox
 - delete unpacked directory and download archive

(you don't have to install firefox to run it)

A bug which has a severe impact on a large portion of Ubuntu users

The amount of users might not be subjective, but the severity of the
impact is. Firefox is by far the most used program of Ubuntu. Its the
first thing they are going to try out. Now I suppose most could figure
out how to fix this eventually.

The question is: will they have the patience? Importing your bookmarks
and moving your documents is the first investment they make. And with
investment comes loyalty. If they can get up and running with their
daily task they may tweak for days getting their 3d card to work. But if
they never get up and running I doubt many new users will put in the
learning-effort required to fix this. That is why I say its critical.

It's just one of those bugs you're gonna see in all the reviews.
Everywhere. It's not a hardware failure. It's not a security hole. But
its severe, as in, it is very damaging to Ubuntu's momentum. If one of
the first things you do fail, you might stop looking and assuming
everything else is as badly tweaked. First impressions are gold. And it
would be a waste, because Edgy is really looking to be as stable and
balanced as Dapper was supposed to be.

Now I assume the bug priorities are related to the likelihood of the bug
being fixed on release. If so, i still am in favor of increasing the
priority. You can get away with a hardware failure (people will just try
it on different hardware). You can't get away with a broken browser.
They'll just think: this just isn't for me, and move back to windows or
try another linux distrobution. Never underestimate the importance of a
good first-impression.
