thanks for all the info, I think i'm getting close to a solution... I remember now that after some kernel updates my network card doesn't come back from hibernation so i've put its drivers (via-rhine) on the modules file and it fixed it. maybe that is the problem, the network is not up when gdm starts. I don't use neither NFS nor NIS and i'm using ubuntu edgy i386. no /var/crash about gdm. This all looks so familar. The gdmgreeter not connecting, and in my case gdmsetup also emulates the greeter and won't /can't connect. Nobody seems to know what's wrong. I have aklso lost the halt/reboot icons/functions from the quit command on the menu (I am running EDGY) Last night after the latest update which included GDM, everything went back to normaluntil I rebooted.
