[Bug 63319] Re: [edgy] web browsing is excessively slow

2006-10-03 Thread didier
Did wifi work with Dapper?

It's surely an upgrade Dapper -- Edgy bug.

Maybe kernel renamed interfaces and KDE didn't notice.

I'm afraid you're on your own for cleaning the mess though.

Did a clean install with Knot3 CD.

It doesn't matter, I'll see on my own, many thanks anyway. Right now is
working fine (I hope thus it will be in the future), maybe it was a
kernel issue, fixed with latest updates.

can you post the output of :
ifconfig
route -n
and /etc/resolv.conf

when it's slow and when it's ok?

And how do you configure the network.

Thanks,

The diff is that eth1 (wireless?) is on in the slow one.

Do you really have a wifi AP?

No, I don't have one, but my laptop's wireless led is always on if I
forget to turn it off with the hot-key (even under Dapper).

But it has an IP... what's in iwconfig output?

If you fully disable the wireless is it still slow?

Don't know, Network-manager or gnome-system-tools or dhclient or upgrade
bug?

BTW you have a lot of interfaces, at least for dhclient :)

I think it is the default IP (convention of IANA) released to an active
interface when it has no IP configured or gets no IP from a DHCP.

I'll let you know, since the issue seems to me a stocastic process,
not always the network goes slowly.

I have Kubuntu, so no network-manager no gnome-system-tools :)

I don't thinks so it should be a 169.254.x.x

And from your log you get a DHCP answer, from a server at 192.168.0.1
(maybe a willing neighbor?)

What do you want to say?
That your setup is badly mangled because it believes it has all these
interfaces cf /var/log/syslog1.

You're right! I badly remembered eth1's IP.

So, the problem is the user (me) or a bug? When I used Dapper this never
happened.

It was the first thing I checked when you told me that the problem might
be the support to ipv6 and the answer is negative. ipv6 module isn't
loaded, as you can see:

2006-10-01 Thread Mateusz Drożdżyński
Thanks for your bug report. The slowness you're experiencing is most
likely caused by enabled ipv6 support. Please try the following:

- Create a file blacklist-ipv6 in /etc/modprobe.d/
- Add 'blacklist ipv6' to this file
- Restart your computer

I reject your bug. Please feel free to reopen it if the ipv6 wasn't the
cause.

The problem is still persisting even with ipv6 module black-listed:

[...]
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 741 2006-07-05 04:01 blacklist
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 628 2006-07-05 04:01 blacklist-framebuffer
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 16 2006-10-01 12:35 blacklist-ipv6

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 41 2006-09-26 18:52 blacklist-oss -
/lib/linux-sound-base/noOSS.modprobe.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 567 2006-07-05 04:01 blacklist-pata
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 38 2006-09-11 00:56 blacklist-scanner
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 838 2006-07-05 04:01 blacklist-watchdog
[...]

Should I give it execution permissions?

So, if I restart network services all works fine, and so did yesterday,
this is why I've suspected this is a bug.
