removing libgamin removed thunar and xubuntu-desktop so I do not see how this could have occured. I see now that either of them is a dependency. That is automatically generated from the shlibs file of libgamin which is the build dependecny of the package. I don't remember what the exact content of the error message was, but some XFCE component was definitely complaining about not being able to find a .so file that started with libgamin. I'm looking at thunar's description in aptitude, and I don't see the gamin dependency. I do note, however, that libthunar-vfs-1-2 depends on either libgamin0 or libfam0. For some reason, the latter seems to have been chosen initially. what error messages did you see? gamin is depended on by thunar, so it should have been in the default xubuntu-desktop install.
