I am affected by this bug and using slapd. I will be able to tell you if it is solved as soon as Debian updates his evolution version (still at 2.22 here, http://packages.qa.debian.org/e/evolution-data-server.html). Any idea how to speed up the process? The Debian evolution version is getting really old... I work around this problem by doing the following: 1. Go to Contacts - LDAP Directory and in the search field select Any field contains 2. Press space once and search for that. It will list for you all the contacts in the database. I agree with you that Evolution should show all contacts by default (they are already cached anyway) and I think this was the behaviour at one point but it was changed. In 2.4, 2.6 nu data is shown.
