** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

  Screenshot of tearing: http://i.imgur.com/J2YWn.jpg

Tearing is visible whenever a video plays. Doesn't matter whether it's
in a media player or Flash, Xv or GL. Using an external screen does not
  help.

[Bug 726902] Re: Loss of vsync when using Metacity.

2011-04-21 Thread Shock
I'm getting video tearing on an Asus EEE PC 901 using compiz+unity.

I've tried xv, gl, gl2 as video outputs for mplayer which all result in
video tearing. There is no video tearing if I use xv:adaptor=1 (video
overlay) as video output.

I have "sync to vblank" set in ccsm/opengl.

Let me know what else I can do to help fix this bug. Thanks.

2011-04-20 Thread Eric Appleman
Sorry for the delay.

Outputs like xv non-overlay and gl both do not achieve vsync. Only xv
overlay.

@Marius, no, since I'm having trouble getting testing feedback from
folks, I have not made plans to fix it at this time.

2011-04-19 Thread Marius Jigmond
I can confirm this bug is still an issue on Intel (core i3) last updated
4/19/11. It works fine in Compiz, but tears in Metacity. Are there plans
to fix this or do we need to hack around for a proper xorg.conf?

@Eric, does fiddling with Xv settings as per comment #6 make the tearing
stop? If not, see my q's in comment #3.

[Bug 726902] Re: Loss of vsync when using Metacity.

2011-03-29 Thread JockeTF
I noticed the same thing in Natty with Xv textured video on Intel
i945GM. The tearing seems to disappear when using Xv video overlay.

You can try this in mplayer with the following command:

$  mplayer -vo xv:adaptor=1

Or by setting XvPreferOverlay to true in xorg.conf, the intel man page
says the following about XvPreferOverlay:

"Make hardware overlay be the first XV adaptor. The overlay behaves
incorrectly in the presence of compositing, but some prefer it due to it
syncing to vblank in the absence of compositing. While most XV-
using applications have options to select which XV adaptor to use, this
option can be used to place the overlay first for applications which
don't have options for selecting adaptors. Default: Textured video
adaptor is preferred."

i'm not sure I had this problem in Maverick as the man page says that
textured video does not sync to vblank. I really did notice the tearing
after upgrading to Natty though. I can't try with the OpenGL output as
it is broken over here.

[Bug 726902] Re: Loss of vsync when using Metacity.

2011-03-23 Thread Bryce Harrington
@Geert, well, vsync/tearing issues are such a generic symptom that two
drivers could have essentially the same problem with no common code
involved at all. In any case, these types of issues are best handled as
per-driver since even if there was shared code it'd probably require a
driver developer to implement a fix. So, for this bug we'll focus on
the -intel issue; if you want it analyzed on the proprietary driver you
should file a new bug.

[Bug 726902] Re: Loss of vsync when using Metacity.

2011-03-23 Thread Geert Jan Alsem
This probably isn't an Intel specific bug, because I'm on NVIDIA
graphics (proprietary drivers) and I'm having the same problem.

BTW, I've never been able to get vsyncing right with Compiz, but
Metacity has always worked perfectly for me (Maverick and before). With
Natty I can't get vsync to work on Metacity though. (Also still not on
Compiz, but that is not a regression)

[Bug 726902] Re: Loss of vsync when using Metacity.

2011-03-02 Thread Bryce Harrington
Interesting. A few random troubleshooting ideas. Try moving aside your
.drirc. Run a video player with its --debug option and look through its
output for any noteworthy error messages. I notice a fb tiling warning
in your Xorg.0.log. Do a 'tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log' in a console
window and then reproduce the issue and see if any messages get printed
in the log.

I assume by the title that you also tested with compiz running and found
it did not happen in that case? If so, you could also try comparing
dmesg, Xorg.0.log, etc. for the two cases and look for differences. (my
guess would be vblank syncing is set differently.)
