It appears that this problem now affects the package xserver-xorg- video-radeonhd. My upgrade went smoothly (have nvidia) and even the driver was updated, but after a restart X won't start, because nvidia driver complains about incorrect version of ABI. Starting Xorg with a suggested switch (-ignoreABI) gives me a black screen. This is not really a legitimate error message, it's just telling you the xserver package was available for your system before the driver had finished building against it.
