I modified the description. I hope it helps. Changing preferences in VLC should not crash compiz/unity or vlc. Ncurses and skins2 is something I remember choosing, to check out the effects. I did not apply ANY downloaded skins--so that shouldn't be an issue. It would be helpful if config and plugins are included in bug report! That did fix vlc, it starts now. I am sorry, but I find your bug report very confuse and I am unable to even understand what symptoms you are trying to describe. Please explain CLEARLY what you expect and what you get instead. It seems you broke your VLC UI configuration though. Playback for me, was somewhat jerky...hardware or setting problem? I can't work with banshee at this time, don't like it at all--so I'm looking to purge--re-install vlc. I'll wait a day or 2, incase some config file might help here. I have discovered my problem with this. It was our friend Banshee that was paused on a song when I played VLC. If you close down Banshee and replay the video, problem solved - the playback was flawless. I got a message that Compiz had crashed during playback after I had moved to a different scene in the DVD, but video playback with VLC is super jerky and stops for a rest every now and then. Users are going to be unimpressed with Unity if this continues to happen.
