[Bug 760322] Re: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s
I'm using Oneiric with Compiz 0.9.6 in the same computer I was having this issue before. Yesterday I installed World of Goo, Penumbra, and Gish and was able to play all of them in fullscreen. I tried installing them also on a Precise live USB, but as I couldn't get them to run (due to some other issue) I wasn't able to see if it's working in Compiz 0.9.7. Nevertheless, it seems like the problem is gone. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/760322 Title: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/760322/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 760322] Re: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. Compiz, in particular, is in heavy development and this bug may have been fixed in the development version of Ubuntu (12.04) if not on your current version. If you are able, it would be of great help if you could confirm if the bug still exists by testing a livecd (available at ubuntu.com). When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect bug # and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue. If you are unable to test the development version, please let us know if you are able to reproduce this issue on Ubuntu 11.10. Thank you for your help and patience. ** Also affects: compiz-core Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: compiz-core Status: New = Incomplete ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/760322 Title: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/760322/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 760322] Re: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s
When I open a fullscreen opengl application on my asus x58l, the sound and the input work fine, but the video freezes almost immediately, and does not unfreeze. I am able to switch to a different console using Ctrl+Alt+F1, and run killall -9 app, which stops the sound and the input, and closes nexuiz, but the video is still frozen at a blank screen. Pressing Alt+SysRq+K brings me back to the login screen WHICH IS STILL TURNED OFF and does not allow me to continue using my computer. The only way is to switch to the console and Control+Alt+Del to reboot. I tested this mainly with google earth. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/760322 Title: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/760322/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 760322] Re: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s
After I installed Amnesia - The Dark Descent the problem was back for Gish and Penumbra, but curiously not for Aquaria. Amnesia crashed after loading either in fullscreen or windowed mode, but I think this is probably due to its graphics being too much for my Intel 965. After I uninstalled Amnesia, things got back to normal.
I got a similar problem here with an Intel GM965, also in Ubuntu 11.04. I was trying to install the games from the Humble Indie Bundle. At first I installed Penumbra and it ran really smoothly. After that, I installed World of Goo, but when I tried to run it I got a screen with something like a very thick black border with the top left quarter of my wallpaper on the center of it. Gish also ran fine at first (it starts at windowed mode), but after I changed the game graphical options to fullscreen and restarted the game I got the same weird screen as before. Aquaria ran a blank screen after the installation. Then I started to get the weird or the blank screen even when I tried to play Penumbra. What I noticed is that if a game started in windowed mode and afterwards I set it to fullscreen everything went fine, but if a game already started at fullscreen I got a blank screen. It happened both in Unity and Gnome2. I think a temporary workaround could be to edit the configs of those games with fullscreen defaults so that they start windowed. After a long time looking for a solution, I decided to uninstall World of Goo and see if it worked out, and it did. All the other games started running correctly in fullscreen, default or not.

I just discovered that running metacity --replace prior to launching the game allows the game to run without any problems. Also, the reason this is reported as a fullscreen bug only is because Neverball worked just fine in windowed mode without changing the window manager to metacity. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/760322 Title: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 760322] Re: Video freezes when playing fullscreen OpenGL games on HP ProBook 4520s
Fullscreen games often invoke a modeset operation when they go full screen, which I'm gathering must trigger some buggy bit of compiz' xrandr wrapping logic. Especially since using metacity works around the problem, it sounds compiz-specific.
