To reproduce, run the herd 2 desktop installer in Qemu with the -std-vga option (it fails without that option too, but differently). The installer switches to text mode (without clearing video ram). I am using a Dell Latitude D800 laptop. It has run previous versions of Ubuntu just fine. The screens locks up after entering the time zone and I am not sure if I can get any logs. It actually locks after specifying the keyboard and I can access logs using a terminal screen after it locks up. Could you attach /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman as that will allow the issue to be further investigated.
