Thanks Brad. Unfortunately I'm unable to find 3.0.0-11.17 for Natty, looking at
mainline and ppa. Please point me to the .deb file, thanks.

[Bug 778052] Re: [2.6.38] Attached Verbatim USB-stick results in high CPU

2011-09-12 Thread Brad Figg
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during
any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all.
Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request
further testing. This is such a request.

We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel
currently in the release pocket than the one you tested when this issue
was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the
bug if this issue still exists or not.

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to
Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from
Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help.

2011-08-14 Thread Sam_
The issue is gone with kernel linux-image-3.0.0-8-generic.
Plugged in verbatim-stick doesn't lead to cpu raise or freeze, neither does
opening palimpsest.

$ apt-cache policy linux-image-3.0.0-8-generic

  Installed: 3.0.0-8.10

** Description changed:

  Reproducable.
Attached usb-stick immediately results in high CPU range 81-89 %.
CPU fan races from ~1200 to ~2200 rpm.
Copy 350+MB from local hd to usb-stick. (Side note: more or less slow Bug
#392089)
After finished, open palimpsest to unmount usb-stick.
  Result: palimpsest freeze, mouse freeze.
Switch to tty, kill palimpsest and gvfs-gdu-volume.
Back to desktop CPU slowed a little down, range 69-72 %.
Reopen palimpsest, CPU races again to ~80+%
Unmount and safely remove usb-stick. CPU slows immediately down to 2-3%.

It doesn't occur when usb-hd is switched on.
  It didn't occur in Maverick.
  USB-stick is FAT32, usb-hd is ext4 and fat32.

[Bug 778052] Re: [2.6.38] Attached Verbatim USB-stick results in high CPU

2011-07-11 Thread Sam_
Still the case on an updated Oneiric and HP 625 notebook, description exactly
as the topic. As soon as usb-stick gets unmounted CPU decreases rapidly.
New observations, the issue occurs only with Verbatim stick, I've tested
another generic-stick on Natty and Oneiric with no issues at all, no high CPU
and top doesn't even take notice from udisk-daemon or gvfs-volume.
Both sticks aren't empty and file copy works.

Since Verbatim didn't have issues with Maverick, there obviously were
changes made somewhere, that Ubuntu doesn't like Verbatim anymore.

Note, due to Oneiric I'll make an apport-collect now with plugged in
Verbatim.

FWIW, I'm seeing this similar phenomenon, but with a Debian
2.6.38-2-amd64 kernel running on an HP EliteBook 2540p. It is probably a
bug in upstream 2.6.38 kernel.

I'm still not sure how to trigger this issue on my HP EliteBook 2540p.
This morning Debian delivered a new kernel 2.6.38-2-amd64 (Version:
2.6.38-5) and with it I seems can't see this issue any more. But it is
also possible that this bug is only triggered after the machine has run
for a long time.
