[Bug 779166] Re: Upgrade to version 11.04, disable the laptop display back light

2013-06-09 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Diogo Coelho, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
Natty reached EOL on October 28, 2012.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the
mainline kernels archive directory daily folder. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you
tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.10-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why
specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

2012-01-08 Thread James Frank
@Kamal i have an Acer Aspire and had the backlight issue, tried the
acpi_backlight change to the grub but didnt notice any improvement ie
screen was still dark at startup. I then used the decrease backlight and
this increased the brightness, so it seems that the settings are
inverted as using the hardware keys to decrease the backlight actually
increases the screen brightness.

2011-12-21 Thread Kamal Mostafa
@Alejandro- Thanks for your report that the patched 'inverted-
backlight' kernel (from comment #56) fixes it for your HP dm-4
notebook... Do you still have the Acer Aspire 4736Z that you mentioned
in #27, and could you test it on that machine?

@Riccardo- Be sure to try the patched kernel along with using the
kernel parameter acpi_backlight=vendor as described on the 'inverted-
backlight' PPA details page (linked from comment #56) -- some systems
will need that parameter to enable the patched code.

I have an acer Aspire 5732Z with intel GMA 4500M graphics running
Linuxmint 11. The sudo setpci fix as outlined in post #33 works for me
as long as I boot on battery.

If I connect the laptop to a power source and boot I end up with a blank
screen. However I can then get the login screen by hitting Ctrl Alt Del
Works fine after that

Since the screen also goes dark when resuming from suspend or other

relevant setpci command to root's crontab, to be executed every minute.
That way, the screen isn't black for more than a minute.

(I might add that the machine affected belongs to a non-technical friend

[Bug 779166] Re: Upgrade to version 11.04, disable the laptop display back light

2011-10-18 Thread cryd_be
Here is a workaround that did the trick on my acer 7715 with GMA4500
chip:

The following command has solved my problem.
sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00

The best is to have this command executed automatically at start up. You
can do that by including that command in your /etc/rc.local file. To
achieve this start up pc the pc with a 10.04 Live USB / Live CD. Go
into the /etc/rc.local of the installed ubuntu 11.04 on your HD and
insert sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00 (without quotes) before the exit
0 command.

My rc.local looks like this:

#!/bin/sh -e
#
# rc.local
#
# This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel.
# Make sure that the script will exit 0 on success or any other
# value on error.
#
# In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution
# bits.
#
# By default this script does nothing.

sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00
exit 0

Hope this will solve problem.

I am sorry, but I can't . I just reported the solution from the
duplicate bug (752165) that solved my unlit bakclight problem. You
might try the original author (Angel Zone) to shed any backlight on this
situation.

My experience is that The sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00 command only
turns on the backlight from 0 to 100%. But the backlight controls will
not work.

[Bug 779166] Re: Upgrade to version 11.04, disable the laptop display back light

2011-06-01 Thread Ghozy Arif Fajri
using acpi_backlight=vendor as kernel parameter doesn't work for me :(
however, some people found solution from this thread:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/752165

in my case, its true that I can get my backlight work again by using
setpci command and add it to my rc.local file. But when i change my
screen resolution or running apps that needs to change screen
resolution, my screen blank again :(

thats why i recommend to set a keyboard shortcut to run an executable
file containing setpci command, so whenever we change resolution and
blank screen again, all we need to do is only press that keyboard
shortcut. at least it helped me a little.

[Bug 779166] Re: Upgrade to version 11.04, disable the laptop display back light

2011-05-16 Thread Alejandro Zunino
Hi,
it works using acpi_backlight=vendor as a kernel parameter

Just edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg and add acpi_backlight=vendor to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=acpi_backlight=vendor quiet splash

Then execute:

# sudo update-grub

[Bug 779166] Re: Upgrade to version 11.04, disable the laptop display back light

2011-05-15 Thread Ghozy Arif Fajri
I have same problem..
Mine is Acer Aspire 4736 with Intel GMA 4500M.
Linux - 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:50 UTC 2011 i686 i686
i386 GNU/Linux

I run this command under no-backlight condition on terminal (I still can read
my screen under flashlight):
sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00
and my back light is back!
but back light is off again after reboot, need to run that command again :(

All I did was add the setpci command into sudoers file (sudo visudo) so i don't
need to type password when running setpci,
and make a new executable file contains that command, then make new startup
entry to run that executable file every startup.

Now i have my back light function normally every startup..
Try this guys, who knows it can help you.
