I was getting this exact problem. I was able to crash through them by trying to install once, and then trying to upgrade the failed install. This cause me to get a really retro UI. I'm hitting the update manager to try to fix this uglyness. My apologies to any programmers who were working on this issue for me. I couldn't take using my Dad's computer any longer, so I looked up how to repair the MBR so I could boot Windows and formatted my Linux partitions. Developers, I too did have the same issue. When the issue happens * Having a windows os already installed. Replicated the issue with Win 7 and Win Vista. Finally the issue was nailed using the below * ubiquity --debug The installer crashes during Create user. Finally, was able to install by disabling Encrypt Home folder option during the install. Hello, Support Team, I'm curious to as if there's anything I should be trying on my end to resolve this situation. I appreciate that nothing has really changed, and that you are all busy processing thousands of bug reports, but as you might imagine, doing my regular computing off of a Live CD isn't ideal, nor is using my Dad's computer. It's not that I mind the wait, because I know you guys are busy and are working on it, but I feel like there's something that I should be trying that I'm not aware of; I'm not exactly what one would call an experienced Ubuntu user, but I'm not totally hopeless with this stuff when given instructions. Hello Brennan, I am having a very similar problem to you except I am trying to install alongside Windows XP home edition. My installation crashes right around (just after) the remove file part of the installation. Out of curiosity, are you installing on a netbook? I am and maybe this is a similarity between our problem and many others. Attempted to install again this morning. Had the same result. I noticed that the error dialogue appeared in front of the installer when it was in the checking for packages to remove phase. Figured it might be relevant. Hi Brennan, Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I looked at your syslog and it shows some locking errors but since they occur several times during the process, they might be unrelated to your problem. I would appreciate if you could reattempt your installation, but producing an installation log with debugging information. This might help determine what the problem is. To do this, start with your LiveCD, and choose Try ubuntu without installing. Once it has booted, open a terminal (one way to do it is to press ctrl-alt-t) and type: ubiquity --debug This will start the installer in debugging mode. Proceed with the installation, and if it crashes, please attach /var/log/installer/debug, /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman.
