Public bug reported:

While installing Oneiric from July 14/2011 daily iso the installer
crashed, with no real explanation. I was installing from an 8GiB usb
thumb drive to a second hard drive in my system. The usb drive was
created using the Startup Disk Creator utility.

How to recreate:

boot from usb drive
when the installer window pops up click "try Ubuntu"
right-click the Install Ubuntu 11.10 icon and select open
click next at language selection screen
click something else on the partitoner screen
click change the / partition
  select ext4
  format partition
  / for mount point
click change the /home partition
  select ext4
  format partition
  /home for mount point
click next on time zone
click next on keyboard
enter user details
click next on the migration screen
