I could not replicate this bug. I followed the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion. I Tried the following: (1) Keyboard shortcut Alt-F2. (2) Enter the command 'compiz --replace'. (3) Wait. The window manager updated without problem. Tried 'gtk-window-decorator --replace' from within a terminal; successfully. More details of your setup are required. Have you tried to reproduce this issue not using the propietary controller? Please could you check if this behaviour continues with the free/radeon controller instead? This only happens if compiz is used. ubuntu 2d works fine! i am using the fglrx driver because using the ati/radeon one the screen stays black.
