Hi All, The fix is found. It's the driver issue of the NVIDIA's graphics cards. Go to software & updates, additional drivers tab, and select the proprietary one provided by the NVIDIA, not Xorg one. I am using 18.04 LTS with unity as a desktop. I get the feeling that it has to do with monitor switch/resolution switch between sessions. Example: I use the work account at the office with 2 lowres screens via a thunderbolt dock. When I'm done for the day, I lock the screen and put the computer to sleep. When I arrive at home, I have some private tasks to do so I open my laptop without any dock and login on my private account. My laptop is Dell XPS13 with hires screen. It works fine. When I'm done I lock the screen and put the computer to sleep. Back at work: I connect my computer to the dock with the two lowres screens and I login to the work account. I get the login screen again. My work session was killed. TLDR; Login to session 1 with 2 lowres screens. Lock screen + sleep Login to other session 2 with laptop screen (hires). Lock screen + sleep Login to session 1 with 2 lowres screens. I think I set it to Won't Fix because other people had set it to Triaged, or Fixed Released incorrectly. I am currently not in Ubuntu, but in Fedora. And I am having the alike troubles with Compiz task switcher. Both Application Switcher and Static Application Switcher. Happens every time I switch. Restarting X helps. Laptop ATI video card. Occurred after upgrading Fedora to 26, earlier it was OK. I was having such errors in the past: with some Compiz plugins related to workspace and task switching. About 2-3 years ago on a PC with NVidia card. Hello. I had the same problem that was driving me crazy for days but today I figure it out. At least one scenario: If I open a Chrome window on, let's say on the second workspace, and go to youtube and let the video play in background. (not minimised!!) if I change the workspace it's freezing constantly. I'm using Ubuntu 17.04. Please let me know if you want more information about this scenario. Adding a comment just to say that I'm under Xenial and it still happens. Even though it is marked as "Won't Fix"... I have the problem ONLY if I quickly go from screen 1 to screen 2 and back to screen 1 (Alt-F2, Alt-F1) and I have SeaMonkey in fullscreen mode. Without apps in fullscreen, I never get that problem. To fix the problem, I can just go to a console (Ctrl-Alt-F12) and kill compiz: ps -ef | grep compiz kill -QUIT wait for it to come back (I use top to see what happens then) and then go to the 7th console (Alt-F7) to restart X11. For those still experiencing this problem, I've found the wmctrl command extremely useful in coping with window freezes. In my case, I often return to a workspace to find a window that I left rolled up now unresponsive. But "wmctrl -r gimp -b toggle,shaded" pops it right back open for me. Ubuntu 14.04 x86, 2gb ram, 1.4ghz intel celeron, fujitsu amilo li2727 laptop ( its old but lovable :p ) For anybody suffering with this I just hit it yet again and recovered from it without needing to do any of the crash or kill techniques described above. i was trying the ctrl+alt+[arrow keys] and it just switched the work space but i couldnt do anything with the program i was moving that stick across work spaces not close the switcher. so i thought. ctrl+alt+L is what worked for me, managed to close the switcher properly and then just resized the program window and finished moving it to the work space. I have a similar bug, but i'm not sure if it's the same issue. I'm not using compiz as far as i know and i don't think i have the workspaces enabled. But after upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04 my system freezes often when chrome is up and a video. It almost seems like a memory problem, but perhaps it's related to the graphics driver. I have a problem with my system freezing, not sure what is causing it. Like a minute ago, my mouse wouldn't click any links, but the mouse icon would change to that of when mousing over a hyper-link, when my mouse was such above the link. It appears to be focus problem, getting stuck somewhere. I'm not sure how to report it, because it's asking for an application and I don't know which application to put it under. I got it to freeze when editing the keyboard shortcuts via Unity Control Centre, twice as a double check after the first time, to see if it was just a coincidence. It happens to me very frequently. When I use 'ctl+alt+arrows' to switch between workspaces, it can happen. The probability of crash goes higher e.g. when I have a chrome page open and watching a youtub in fullscreen. my details: Linux vostro 3.16.0-60-generic #80~14.04.1-Ubuntu unity 7.2.6 Compiz 0.9.11.3 I tried to downgrade and upgrade my nvidia driver, but it does not make any difference. This just happened to me (i remember why i upgraded to 15 now) I needed to roll back as some programs that i need have not yet caught up. All the same the bug is as described. Can move between programs workspaces so long as you do not grab the title bar. Freeze occurs only freeing up after eventual crash forcing to log back in. I've experienced an occasional lock-up when showing Workspaces as well. However, in my case I can see that applications are still running - for example I can still type into a terminal. I'm running 14.04 LTS in VirtualBox 5. I use Hotcorners to trigger the Workspaces view. I've noticed I can back out of this "crash" by sending Ctrl-Alt-Delete to the Ubuntu VM, which opens the Log Out dialogue. I confirm this as it happens to me quite a lot! But in my case, if any application is in fullscreen mode (e.g. skype, QtCreator, Android Studio...) and if I try to switch between wrkspaces by ctrl-alt-arrow keys, compiz cpu utilization goes to 100% and there is no escape from it! only solution is hard reset...going to a terminal does not always work in a terminal and my computer does not respond at all. Right now I've disabled the launcher shortcut for the workspace switcher since using it safely without a total system lock up is hit-and-miss. I've also disabled the hot corner I had configured and the Super+S shortcut in the expo plugin. However, something seems hard coded somewhere since I cannot for the life of me figure out where to COMPLETELY disable the expo plugin. Super+S is still captured as the command to initiate the workspace switcher. If I had a way to disable Super + S from doing this I wouldn't have to worry about having a key combination of death on my machine right now. Any hints as to how to completely disable this shortcut? On 14.04 the same: when I switch workspace in windows oftentimes it get stuck on workspace mode (where I see the 4 workspaces). The moust pointer becomes a hand and there is no way to switch back to normal mode. This seems to happen more if there are windows refreshing (e.g. a tail in some terminal window). I typically get out of this by kill -HUP compiz from Ctrl+Alt+F1 I could not get out of it disabling snapping windows because it said unity plugin requires. I'm moving a nautilus window when in workspace switcher mode and the switcher freezes but not entire desktop. Timer, weather and changing widgets in the window updates. This doesn't affect google chrome app window. Simply to reproduce: 1. Open clementine or any nautilus window 2. Click workspace switcher widget to go into workspace switcher mode 3. Drag and move the window for two seconds 4. Workspace switcher freezes I'm running NVIDIA driver. I'm seeing this too on Utopic quite regularly. For me, it happens when I use the icon in the task switcher to get an overview of the four workspaces. When things freeze, I see the four workspaces filling the screen, with the shrunk windows in each workspace, and no more response at that point. Problem stays reproducable with compiz-standalone. Seems to freeze while running draw-heavy tasks such as videos, games or graphic-editing. Problem stays reproduceable under Ubuntu 14.04 as well as on Archlinux with the same setup (both rund proprietary NVIDIA drivers). I'm also experiencing this bug, however it does NOT seem to happen when I don't have chrome running. Switched to firefox and it seems to be running fine. I'll report back when I have more information. If you need a testbed just install gnome-session-flashback in a 14.04 virtualbox vm. I tried using it and had the exact same issues as on my desktop. I used the latest virtualbox from the 14.04 repos/no usb/ no guest tools It shipped broken. I read in another place that there was a new compiz in staging with large feature changes. [GeForce 9300 / nForce 730i] (rev b1) running gnome-session-flashback In my case, ONLY the gnome-panel running the desktop switcher applet seems to completely block. I can unreliably bring it back by playing with the top gnome-panel. I can reliably bring it back by killall gnome-panel. While affected, i can move my mouse to within a few pixels of the top of the screen and it will activate the on_hover of the application button directly below it on the bottom panel. E.X. I run gnome terminal, its application button appears on the bottom panel, i switch desktops (creating the problem). and i can then make it active by clicking the TOP of the screen directly above the button. Regardless, the workplace switcher has NEVER reflected the windows in the other desktops. I moved to Metacity just to be able to work. Confirm for 14.04. It happens almost every time I'm moving a VirtualBox virtual machine window. I am also having the problem with 14.04 and it happens regularly. I have a newer AMD Cpu (R9 270x) Problem happens very quickly when watching video using pipelight. I'll test out the Windows Key+Esc. I found a way to get out of the stuck or freeze. Press your key that opens dash (windows key if pc-keyboard) + ESC.
