[Bug 83471] Re: PCMCIA hard disk drive not detected

2007-11-26 Thread fishor
PLease take a look to this bug:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7119

it seems to be same issue. Looks like this bug need more vanilla kernel
testing, if you can please compile latest git kernel and subscribe
yourself to the upstream bug.

[Bug 83471] Re: PCMCIA hard disk drive not detected

2007-10-12 Thread Paul L.
Wrote to David Hinds, the listed author of pcmcia.ko and pcmcia_core.ko but he
replied  I wrote some of the original Linux
PCMCIA code but haven't worked on it at all in the last few years. This is
what I wrote:
Quite a few bug reports have been filed concerning non-functioning support
 for
pcmcia card devices under Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn. I am one of the
contributors to these reports. Todate, no resolution to the problem has
 been
 made.

I've run a very preliminary set of tests, consisting entirely of booting
 from
liveCDs, Kubuntu Dapper Drake (6.06.1 LTS) and Kubuntu Edgy Eft (6.10),
 and
comparing the results to my installed Kubuntu Feisty Fawn (7.04).
Specifically, I've copied the resultant /var/log/dmesg files for all three
systems, copied the relavent sections for my pcmcia HD from each, and
extracted the module information for pcmcia support for all three systems.

Native support for the pcmcia HD is present in Dapper Drake. I only had to
create a mount point and add an entry to /etc/fstab and remount the file
 systems to access the device.

Due to the introduction of the /media bug in Kubuntu Feisty Fawn, you have
 to
point to media:/ in order to have your devices displayed in System Menu |
Storage Media. However, my pcmcia HD is still listed, and again, creating
 a
mount point and adding the entry to /etc/fstab and remounting the file
systems results in access to the device.

Functional access to the pcmcia HD is gone in Kubuntu Feisty Fawn. It
 isn't
even listed in System Menu | Storage Media even if one changes to media:/

You are credited as the author to both pcmcia.ko and pcmcia_core.ko in all
three versions. I'm contacting you in the hopes that maybe you can aid in
getting this problem resolved. I (and many others) would really like to be
able to use our pcmcia HDs in Kubuntu Feisty Fawn.

I'm attaching my documentation of the three systems. If any other
 information
would be relavent, please let me know. I'm willing to run tests and report
 results.

I'm attaching the files.

[Bug 83471] Re: PCMCIA hard disk drive not detected

2007-10-10 Thread Paul L.
Last night, I booted both, Kubuntu Dapper Drake LiveCD and later,
Kubuntu Edgy Eft LiveCD. Both releases correctly identified my PCMCIA
hard drive (KINGSTON DP-PCM2/5GB, V2.11 B, max PIO2). I only had to add
entries to the /etc/fstab for it, run sudo mount -a and I had access to
the device.

Kubuntu Feisty Fawn 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Sun Sep 23 19:50:39 UTC
2007 i686 GNU/Linux does not, as these bug posts attest, work in
properly identifying and setting up this PCMCIA hard drive. So,
something was done to the kernel (?) when Feisty was released.

I see that this bug report is still listed as STATUS Incomplete and
IMPORTANCE Undecided. What is it going to take to get this problem off
of dead center and fixed?

The drive works on another laptop using a 2.4 kernel and the cs-ide

[Bug 83471] Re: PCMCIA hard disk drive not detected

2007-03-25 Thread Steve Flux
My Toshiba 2GB PCMCIA hard drive (MK2001MPL/PA3079U) is not listed after
boot, nor after a hotplug. There are two entries in dmesg, shown here:

ata3.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x1)
ata3: failed to recover some devices, retrying in 5 secs

and the two lines are repeated again after 5 secs.
I am using the recent Feisty Beta LiveCD and it is the first time I have tried
Ubuntu on my Laptop, a Toshiba A50-114. I am able to use this LiveCD on the
laptop for most everything else, ( not tested everything yet).
The output from uname -r is: 2.6.20-12-generic
I have attached the outputs that are requested for hardware problems.

This pcmcia hard drive still functions perfectly in XP and the fault is
reproducible every time I boot with the LiveCD.

[Bug 83471] Re: PCMCIA hard disk drive not detected

2007-03-07 Thread Kyle McMartin
Could you try adding libata to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file and
regenerating the initramfs using:

mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-`uname -r` `uname -r`

And rebooting?

Hopefully this will force it to use the old IDE drivers instead of the
libata ones.

Cheers,
  Kyle

[Bug 83471] Re: PCMCIA hard disk drive not detected

2007-02-18 Thread Cristian Aravena Romero
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Unfortunately we can't
fix it, because your description didn't include enough information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by
the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command uname -a in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command dmesg dmesg.log and attach the resulting file
dmesg.log to this bug report.
3. Please run the command lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log and attach the
resulting file lspci-vvnn.log to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available here:
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelProblems Thanks!
