For me this does work out of the box. Make sure you have Suspend set for Lid closed in System settings/Power. Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the others). apport-collect attached this bunch of files. To reproduce the bug I closed the lid, waited for about 10 seconds and when it didn't go to sleep, opened the lid again and run apport-collect.
