Since I installed Ubuntu 7.04 beta this bug has been fixed. Yay for the
new system - nice work on sorting out the codecs problems. Marking as
'Fix Released'

2007-03-07 Thread Michael Vogt
I wonder why you have seen this message at all. The automatic codec
install magic of totem/g-a-i should have openend a window with the right
codecs. Did that not happen for you?

[Bug 87640] Re: "Add/Remove Applications" does not find Totem codecs

2007-03-04 Thread Duncan Lithgow
The affected package has been changed back to gnome-app-install after I
set it to gstreamer0.10. So my question is: "Who writes the short
descriptions of packages as we see them in gnome-app-install?"

That's where this bug should be addressed.

[Bug 87640] Re: "Add/Remove Applications" does not find Totem codecs

2007-03-04 Thread Duncan Lithgow
** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #414693
   http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=414693

** Also affects: totem (upstream) via
   http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=414693
   Importance: Unknown
   Status: Unknown

** Description changed:

- If Totem (2.17.92) is missing a codec, it gives a message like:
+ if a user goes to play an MPEG-2 with Totem (2.17.92) they will get the
+ message:

  ---
"The playback of this movie requires a MPEG-2 System Stream demuxer plugin
which is not installed."
  ---

- But if I search in 'Applications > Add/Remove Applications' for words
- and phrases from the Totem message, like "MPEG-2" or "MPEG-2 System
- Stream demuxer plugin" I get "There is no matching application
- available." Now I know this is not true because if I search for just
- "MPEG" I get what I'm looking for. So the problem here is that the
- search function is not finding the correct packages needed by Totem and
- suggested in the failure message.
+ On a freshly installed (Ubuntu) system if a user goes to play an MPEG-2
+ file they will get the message:

- I see two ways around this:
+ "The playback of this movie requires a MPEG-2 System Stream demuxer
+ plugin which is not installed."

- 1. 'Add/ Remove packages' creates specific links for keywords mentioned in
Totem, like 'MPEG-2'. This could be a fast way to get around the problem, but a
poor solution.
- 2. 'Add/ Remove packages' changes the summary text of the relevant packages
so they mention the keywords used by Totem. This seems to me like the best
option.
-
- Either way the developers of Totem, developers of 'Add/Remove
- applications' and Canonical should talk about a way of coordinating
- their efforts to avoid these kinds of problems.
-
- Could this regarded as a "collaboration" bug?
+ But the package required (gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly) does not mention
+ the word MPEG-2 in it's short description. It mentions MPEG2. So if you
+ try and search for using the text from the message you will not find the
+ right package.
