[Bug 888415] Re: Speakers do not mute when headphone jack is in use. Multimedia keys unmute speakers.
semitones, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012. Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a supported release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. ** Tags added: needs-upstream-testing ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888415 Title: Speakers do not mute when headphone jack is in use. [Bug 888415] Re: Speakers do not mute when headphone jack is in use. Multimedia keys unmute speakers.
Testing the new ALSA drivers seems to be working fine: speakers are muted, (alsamixer still reports speakers have sound on, at 100%), but no sound comes from the speakers. I'll keep testing to see if I can get the bug to reappear -- should I apport-collect again if I can recreate it? Still haven't gotten my USB drives in the mail, so not able to test oneiric. Will report results when I do. Is there a command to show what alsa drivers the system is using currently (just to make sure)? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888415 Title: Speakers do not mute when headphone jack is in use. [Bug 888415] Re: Speakers do not mute when headphone jack is in use. Multimedia keys unmute speakers.
For example, right now the headphones are in and the speakers are muted (alsamixer shows speakers still at 100%). I don't know yet why it works sometimes and fails others.
Hi, thanks for your quick responses. I should be able to boot from an oneiric LiveUSB monday and test it out. Meanwhile I can try the new ALSA drivers. Since it is an intermittent problem, the only way I can think of testing it would be to use it normally for a week or so and see if I notice the problem happening or not. I may just continue to use the ALSA drivers if they keep working and report back in a month or so if there are no problems. I'll get back to you about Oneiric much sooner. Slightly unrelated note: I decided not to upgrade past Maverick because 11.04 ran much hotter and decreased my battery life significantly, and on 11.10, my touchpad sidescroll isn't detected properly (ALPS pointing device, bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/747092). Both problems which make my laptop more or less unusable, so I've stuck with maverick :) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/888415 Title: Speakers do not mute when headphone jack is in use. [Bug 888415] Re: Speakers do not mute when headphone jack is in use. Multimedia keys unmute speakers.
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: This is an intermittent problem that has recurred three or four times since I installed kubuntu on top of my 10.10 ubuntu installation. I've been using kubuntu daily, and it did not happen in ubuntu. If I use the headphone jack, I expect my laptop speakers to automatically mute. However they do not. If I open alsamixer, I can manually lower the speaker volume to 0, however if I mute it, everything goes mute. If I use the multimedia keys to mute, raise, or lower the volume, the speaker volume jumps back to 100%.
