In 11.04 you could still set Gnome 2 as default desktop. This only
changed in 11.10 where Gnome 2 is not available anymore.

No. I do not like the unity desktop, particularly the big buttons on the
left hand side that   cannot be permanently removed so I will not be
updating to a newer version.

  Sound plays initially on VLC, Movie player etc but cuts out after a
  time anything from ten to thirty minutes for no apparent reason. The
  only thing I can do to restore the sound is to close the application
