funny, just saw, that the bug is quite exactly 10years old, which is why it looked like from this month. The problem still looks very similar but it isn't a regression from 5.4.0.89 to 5.4.0.91 at all. The kernel seems to get confused though if you mount a share once with and later withouth unix extensions. In such a situation unmounting *all* cifs shares helped to solve it. I've CCd kernel package maintainer Stefan Bader also. I've seen this problem on a customer machine also with current linux- image hwe-18.04 (5.4.0.91) kernels. Directories with nounix mount option are empty. Previous 5.4.0.89 seems to have issues *with* unix extensions here though, that one wan not able to mount at all if the unix mount option is added. So, it's not related to autofs package, but to CIFS and samba server.
