[Bug 92370] Re: When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation
h3: the message you are getting: no nvidia card found is not what this bug report is about. You need to look for or make another bug report. This bug report is about the message Desktop effects could not be be enabled which you should never see in Gutsy as it seems to have been removed. -- When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92370 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 92370] Re: When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation
Assuming this is not going to be fixed in Feisty, shall we just mark it a duplicate of bug #89697 which is more relevant to Gutsy now that the restricted driver installer system seems to be working well? ** Description changed: Binary package hint: desktop-effects - I couldn't find a list of supported graphic cards for compiz anywhere - - but for the record it doesn't work with my GeForce Go 7400. It just - thinks for a while and then says Desktop effects could not be be - enabled + Description updated Aug 20th '07 - I understand (now) that it only works with the nvidia-glx driver. - desktop-effects should check for the presence of supported drivers and - if it's missing it should display some text, perhaps: Desktop effects - does not support the graphics driver you have installed. To enable - desktop effects you will need to install one of the drivers listed at - http://blah.com; + = Running Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) = + If Desktop Effects fails it gives the message Desktop effects could not be be enabled + + For users of nVidia Graphics Cards this can be because the machine needs + the binary driver from nVidia which is not installed by default (nvidia- + glx). But the message doesn't mention any of this so the user doesn't + know what to do. + + = Running Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) = + In 7.10 the system offers to install the nVidia binary driver and if this works will enable Desktop Effects. But it doesn't let you know how well your graphics card is supported. This problem is explained in bug #89697 ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 Date: Wed Mar 14 22:36:30 2007 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 7.04 Uname: Linux duncan-laptop 2.6.20-10-generic #2 SMP Mon Mar 12 00:02:49 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux -- When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92370 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 92370] Re: When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation
I have a GeForce 8600 GT and I have the same problem with same error message. By default the desktop effect seemed to work when I first compiled the binary drivers, but when I selected advanced effects I got an error message no nvidia card found, so I tried to disable desktop effect but since then I never been able to re-enable it, I always get the no nvidia card message.. As for the restricted drivers manager it worked once on my old pc with my GeForce 7600 (on feisty) but failed to recognize my 8600 (on gutsy). I agree that the initial error message is quite vague as it's obvious that desktop effects have not been enabled, an explanation or a hint on how to resolve this issue would be welcome and more useful. h3 -- When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92370 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 92370] Re: When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation
Are you suggesting that is an explanation? It gives no indication at all where the problem might be or how to apply a resolution. I hope it can become mor. zeddock -- When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation https://launchpad.net/bugs/92370 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 92370] Re: When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation
Oh, you mean an explanation on why it failed. I thought this was about an error message (and there is actually one). So I'm reopening the report. ** Changed in: desktop-effects (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released = Confirmed -- When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation https://launchpad.net/bugs/92370 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It already shows a message saying Desktop Effects couldn't be enabled. ** Changed in: desktop-effects (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low Status: Confirmed = Fix Released -- When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation https://launchpad.net/bugs/92370 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
