Public bug reported:

The latest update causes sound to play through both connected speakers /
headphones and the internal speaker. No amount of playing with the gnome
sound control tool causes the sound to come out of only one device.

Playing with alsamixer, I came up with a setting that works. I have
attached two screenshots (good.png and bad.png) to show two different
alsamixer configurations. The good is what I currently have and the bad
is what happens if I bump the volume button on my keyboard. The bad.png
demonstrates sound coming very loudly out of both the internal speaker
and the headphones at the same time.

Please note that the reason that it comes out very loudly is likely
related to bug: 149622 which was also a problem in 11.10. I am hoping
that I can help get to the bottom of both of these bugs during this
testing period.
