[Bug 92748] Re: Latest Feisty Fawn Breaks Dell Laptop Intel Wireless

2007-03-31 Thread flossgeek
I have reset my wireless router and reconfigured the settings on the
router, I first tested Feisty without the need to have a WEP key for
connection and all seemed fine. I then added the WEP key settings and
so far it is still functioning correctly.

You could try reseting your routers and set it back up. Your wireless
may return to normality again.

Re: [Bug 92748] Re: Latest Feisty Fawn Breaks Dell Laptop Intel Wireless

2007-03-30 Thread Melvyn Murphy
Hi Flossgeek,
There's more to this stuff than meets the eye, when I connect (wireless) to
our wireless router with a file share client (bit comet etc) it will break
the effective connection though it will still show a running ok in the task
bar.
This happens in both Windows and Ubuntu, if I take a cable and connect to
the wireless router all is well.
This presumably has nothing directly to do with the Ubuntu wireless but is
none the less weird.
Best regards

[Bug 92748] Re: Latest Feisty Fawn Breaks Dell Laptop Intel Wireless

2007-03-30 Thread flossgeek
Yes something isn't quite right, and the network is getting confused
somewhere, I think its network-manager but I dont want to put blame on
that with out a definate reason for why!

I have also noticed netowork-manager tries to first connect to my
neighbours wireless router which is open, then when I select, my
wireless network it says it has reconnected but no connection when I try
to browse web pages or download a package using apt-get.

We need some logs of some sort, we can presume all day long but without
debugging or getting some outputs how can we find the bug?

We have two weeks to go before release, lets get this sorted. Has anyone
tried removing network manager and then just use network admin, to see
if this works.

Could it be a DHCP resolve type issue between different networks?

Yes Flossgeek,
There's a lot that's difficult to understand and I certainly don't
understand enough to make any real comment accept that all problems
disappear on both Win Xp and UBuntu when I connect to the wireless router
with a wire !
OK at least the logic implies it can't be UBuntu specific.

[Bug 92748] Re: Latest Feisty Fawn Breaks Dell Laptop Intel Wireless

2007-03-29 Thread Sarah Hobbs
for general information - the fix is to install the restricted package.

the driver is restricted, in the way ubuntu can distribute it, so needs
to be in the linux-restricted-modules.

For understanding packages being kept back, you may want to look at man
apt-get - it explains a lot more of this.

By the way, it's not a problem in not understanding something - don't
take it personally. Just look for the way to understand it, and
research it a bit if you're interested, so you know for next time. This
bugtracker isnt a substitute for support on how apt works, for example -
the manual pages will tell you that, along with various other
documentation on the internet. :)

[Bug 92748] Re: Latest Feisty Fawn Breaks Dell Laptop Intel Wireless

2007-03-28 Thread flossgeek
I have an IBM Thinkpad with the PRO/Wireless 2200BG card, has functioned
perfectly until now. Network manager does connect, asks for my keyring
password and connects according to the icon. I see a strong signal
strength, and it reports that it is connected.

If i do a ping everything seems fine, however browsing in Firefox fails
most of the time (pages dont load). The same happens with apt-get if i
do an update for example it just doesn't connect.

It does work okay sometimes though, but most of time will drop out
although it reports its still connected.

Any logs needed please let us know I will happily provide them.

That Bug's taking a walk !
Sarah's advise to update the kernel and install the restricted package
seemed to fix my Dell with a Pro/Wireless 2200BG.
That was probably a kernel ago now.
Let's hope there will be a real solution as it looks like this card is
pretty ubiquitous.

2007-03-26 Thread Chris Puttick
Also breaks Samsung and presume any laptop with the same wireless
chipset. Mine was an upgrade from Edgy using the new updater, and failed
to upgrade the linux-restricted-modules-generic, marking the new one as
held back, along with:

 libstrigihtmlgui0 linux-headers-generic strigi-client strigi-daemon

No idea what held back means, it was not a consultative process.
Manually installing linux-restricted-modules-generic (in my case using
apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-generic) resolved the
problem. This would not be a good release version feature...

BTW, Linuxing for 7 years, always on the bleeding edge, but only Ubuntu
since Edgy.

[Bug 92748] Re: Latest Feisty Fawn Breaks Dell Laptop Intel Wireless

2007-03-17 Thread Benoit Malet
Hello !

In GNOME, it just says Disconnected ... I see the picture of 2 screens
on top right of my screen (with an attention mark), with the bar that
should be green which is orange.

So I guess it's not an issue with the driver for the card itself, but
with how it's used/setup for Internet use ...

It's not only Internet that won't come, it's just not connected to any
network ...

Hope this clarifies the situation ...

(this is not really critical as the wired networking is OK)

Yes Sarah,
It looked like herd 5 was well down the dev path but your point is solid.
I am looking for a workstation that I can use as reference when normal
people mention a MS Windows alternative and UBuntu seems to me to be so
close.
Impatience got the better of me.
Unfortunately I don't have much experience with NIX systems of any kind but
I will keep looking at UBuntu, it is the system that runs the most with the
minimum amount of adjustment and setting up.
Thanks once again

Hi Benoit,
Thanks again for your interest, Sarah's comments fixed the wireless
connection problem on my Dell.
I did see that although (when it was broken) I could choose the ESSID when I
then listed the wireless properties it gave ESSID as nothing, no value.
I don't know what that means or if it's significant.

Please upgrade to the -11 kernel (run sudo apt-get update sudo apt-

Then, please install linux-restricted-modules-generic, and reboot the

This package normally gets installed when you run the installer - it can
just be a quirk of running the development release, while it's still in
