Public bug reported:

Hi there,

on my Xubuntu 11.10 system there's an annoying bug: No matter wether I
choose restart or shutdown the filesystem is not unmounted cleanly, i.e.
fsck has to work every time the machine is started. This behaviour shows
up with any of my users. The "entry point" for shutdown/reboot is
neither important: user desktop or login screen. I've tried gdm and
lightdm, both show the same erraneous behaviour.

I don't know where to dig further so there's no logfile attached here.

Any ideas please?
