I upgraded to Kunbuntu Edgy to Feisty and now some wmv playback is crippled too (wmv8 / 9 ?). But the backend is not gstreamer, it's Xine in my case (Kaffeine/Codeine). Files play fine in Mplayer though. I'm set up with the medibuntu repos.
