[Bug 989793] Re: [nouveaufb, efifb] blank screen on startup, Visual is FB_VISUAL_TRUECOLOR; not using graphics

2012-08-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
John Cottier, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available
following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test
the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel
version specifically you tested and remove the 'needs-upstream-testing'
tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the
tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the
'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER', where VERSION-NUMBER is the
version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER', where VERSION-NUMBER is the
version number of the kernel you tested.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why
specifically you were unable to test it and add the tag: 'kernel-unable-
to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

2012-05-13 Thread Steve Langasek
Ok, definitely not a plymouth issue then - either grub or the kernel is
to blame for seeing an EFI framebuffer where there can't possibly be
one.

Colin, Andy: ideas on where to go from here?

2012-05-08 Thread Steve Langasek
It's very unlikely that the kernel could be tricked into thinking
there's EFI when there isn't. And Dell were early adopters of EFI. I
think this is a genuine bug in the efi-nouveaufb hand-off.

Can you run the 'sudo fbset -i' command mentioned in my previous mail so
we can see what it says about your video card?

2012-05-08 Thread John Cottier
I am pretty certain this PC (circa 2007) does not support EFI boot.
The service manual does not mention it, and as far I can find out, only
some Power Edge models have this.
I have no special partition for EFI either. I only have standard EXT4
partitions for root home and swap.

occasionally I catch brief bits of Crash report submission stopping or
Broken pipe on the text. On one occasion it turned my monitor off
(standby IE no signal) during boot.

The nouveau driver is not very happy. I was just researching in FireFox
and it hard locked!
Only, Ctrl+Alt+SysReq+r and then Ctrl+Alt+Del worked after that (X
server would not respond to Ctrl+Alt+BkSpace). Blank display during
power down (monitor in standby).
