Re: [Bug 999491] Re: package firefox 12.0+build1-0ubuntu0.11.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
All right, this is strange. (To me, I've never delved into this particular area before). /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/gnome-www-browser only contains references to Chromium, but the problems are all with Firefox. I didn't see anything that looked obviously corrupt, and after making a safety copy of the file and editing the one line that seemed suspicious, it returned the same error. So I tried Dave's suggestion and got a message that the file was corrupt. Having a safe copy, I deleted the file and got Setting up firefox (12.0+build1-0ubuntu0.11.04.1) ... update-alternatives: warning: /etc/alternatives/gnome-www-browser has been changed (manually or by a script). Switching to manual updates only. update-alternatives: using /usr/bin/firefox to provide /usr/bin/gnome-www-browser (gnome-www-browser) in auto mode. update-alternatives: warning: /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser has been changed (manually or by a script). Switching to manual updates only. update-alternatives: using /usr/bin/firefox to provide /usr/bin/x-www-browser (x-www-browser) in auto mode. I am waiting for a download to finish before I restart Firefox. Hmm. I may try deleting Chromium. Now have a new, much saner-looking /etc/alternatives/gnome-www-browser (never looked at it before the problem) which mentions only Firefox. Good enough for me. Thanks again for all the help. PS, sorry for all the mails, but did want to add I did NOT remove Chromium. I simply removed the aforementioned file, ran sudo dpkg --configure -a, and allowed Firefox to finish updating. All seems well now.
