Yes it loses the icons. When I reboot they are there again.. I am a computer
numpty so how do I run the command?

Firstly, thank you for reporting this bug and make Ubuntu better.
with i lose everything on the desktop do you mean, the icon disappear (but
with a reboot they came back) or your file is deleted?
next, do you use Ubuntu with the default desktop environment (Unity)? the 3d
or 2d version?
i think this problem is related to the file manager, so can you run this
command in order to collect information on your system and attach in
this bug automatically?
apport-collect -p nautilus 1036661
without those informations we can't go ahead, so the bug still
incomplete.
