No desktop effects are being used. I have the standard Intel chipset that comes with the Dell D3000. I rectified the problem by avoiding KDE envirorment installation. Something about it seemed to gum up the works, being that gnome is defaulted to 2 panels and KDE messes with it and gives four. no, they are turned off. The bug seems to come from the KDE consol, being that gnome is defaulted to 2 desktops and KDE gives four. I rectified the problem by removing KDE desktop.
