I uninstalled the screensaver ages ago, long before this problem began.  
Another problem that started around the same time as this however is that  
totem crashes the second I try to play anything with it. Mplayer still  
works. Have no clue if it's related.

One more thing:
What do you use as screensaver? If you set "Blank screen" as
screensaver in gnome-screensaver-preferences, then the screen goes
black, regardless of which setting in gnome-power-preferences.
