I was looking into the Bios setting and it actually has 2 SATA controllers: JMicron and Sil3121 (or something like that). Both controllers are set to PCI mode although only the JMicron has the ACHI (?) mode. In any case, I just downloaded the current Feisty (with the March 27 date) and tried to boot it. I got a bunch of messages that looked different than befoer but the end result was pretty much the same. At the end I was getting a series of messages for ata5 stating things like failed to set xfermode then failed to recover some devices, then retrying in 5 sec. After a few seconds a very similar series but saying something about limiting UDMA speed to 133 then to 100. The same series appeared for ata6 and after that I got the ATA abnormal exit thing and this was it. Is my motherboard that peculiar? Anybody else with Abit out there having the same or different luck. Finally (and I am repeating myself), I do not understand WHY CAN I BOOT 6.10 just fine??? RE: [Bug 97121] Re: Missing 64bit support for Desktop users
Dear Mike, thank you for your detailed and very helpful answer. I read a lot about the chroot system but it seems to be too messy a solution. I found the programme linux32 to be an acceptable solution for some tasks, but other than that I had to use Automatix, which I found to be something line satan in the world of Ubuntu-programmers. That is why I am sure that apps like Skype, Picasa, Google Earth, etc. could be installed on amd64 environments just like under Automatix: Easy, fast and clean. And I hope that will be possible in one of the next versions. And for general inputs which are not quite bugs, like this one, is there a different section I could write them in, not to annoy you guys too much, who have to work and fix real problems? Thanks again, Andreas From: Mike Dahlgren [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: Bug 97121 [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Bug 97121] Re: Missing 64bit support for Desktop users Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2007 02:29:28 - Andreas, I understand where you are coming from and I too would appreciate all these packages working under 64 bit Ubuntu. However I don't think this qualifies as a bug and here's why. First, there is nothing anyone can really do about binary packages from other sources like Google or Adobe. The best we can do is hack them to work on top of a 64bit environment examples can be found below: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=341727 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=196011 Second, you want Ubuntu to promote 64 bit for its desktop adoption, however there are no real advantages to using a 64 bit system on the desktop. server or database yes, desktop no. Other areas will especially not work like running binary video decoders where there is no 64bit windows equivalent and will never work. If you want to continue to peruse this I would recommend setting up a chroot environment and enjoying the best of both worlds. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=24575 ~ Mike -- Missing 64bit support for Desktop users https://launchpad.net/bugs/97121 _ Wenn Ihnen E-Mail nicht schnell genug ist: MSN Messenger! - http://www.imagine-msn.com/messenger/default2.aspx?locale=de Kostenlos downloaden! -- Missing 64bit support for Desktop users https://launchpad.net/bugs/97121 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 71560] Re: Crash information collection depletes resources, clogs up and crashes system
Same here, and it takes a ridiculously huge amount of time to gather info. Most recently: 1:10 - Thunderbird crashes; system becomes sluggish. 1:13 - apport reports that thunderbird crashed, offers to report problem. Accepted; apport begins gathering data and system becomes nearly unresponsive. 1:20 - apport reports that it has finished gathering data and offers to send it with the report. Accepted. System becomes nearly unresponsive until 1:42. During this time memory usage of apport-gtk balloons to about 300MB virtual, 181MB resident. 1:42 - system becomes more responsive. apport is still sending data 1:45 - launchpad web page comes up. How is it anything like acceptable that this application takes 35 minutes to process and report a single crash?? In my opinion even the 3 minutes taken for it to notice an application problem is unacceptable. -- Crash information collection depletes resources, clogs up and crashes system https://launchpad.net/bugs/71560 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 97310] Kernelpanik while opening a usbserial port with Feisty Fawn Beta
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-13-generic Background: My company is developing an OSS manager for 3G devices. We support several devices in our product. One of them is a Huawei E620 UMTS card. While with Edgy we never had a problem whatsoever, with Feisty trying just to open one of the device's serial ports while result in a kernel panik. This only happens with this model of card, and randomly. Say 80% of the time I've tried it has resulted in a kernel panik while the other 20% has worked flawlessly. I've got to say that this card works perfectly in Windows/OpenSUSE 10.2 and Edgy so its not hardware fault. [Bug 95241] Re: firefox - the connection was reset - Fiesty
I just want to add that the same thing happens on firefox 2.0.0.3. Curiously though, this problem only appears at my work place. When using firefox on the same computer from a different network (home) everything works as expected. What makes this bug so strange is that there is no firewall or proxy at work, which could interfere. Maybe there is some strange kernel tcp/ip router interaction going on here, which is only triggered by gecko based browsers? Hard to imagine, but I am not an expert... -- firefox - the connection was reset - Fiesty https://launchpad.net/bugs/95241 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
