install ubuntu 7.04.

Then, I tried again.
This time, I select English language. Thereupon, I can install ubuntu 7.04.
After install, I change language to Korean.

I still cannot boot my Acer Travelmate 270 laptop with the latest daily
builds and the new kernel. It does not have a jMicron controller. The
symptoms are the same as those of the jMicron bug, but clearly the cause
 is
different. Is there another bug report that is handling this issue
 because
I've noticed that most bugs related to boot problems are being closed and
marked as duplicates of the jMicron one when it is not necessarily the
 case.

2007/3/28, apjaworski [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Unfortunately the fix still does not work for me :-). Again, I have a new
system with Abit AB9 Pro motherboard. I was looking into the Bios setting
and it actually has 2 SATA controllers: JMicron and Sil3121 (or something
like that). Both controllers are set to PCI mode although only the
 JMicron
 has the ACHI (?) mode.

In any case, I just downloaded the current Feisty (with the March 27 date)
and tried to boot it. I got a bunch of messages that looked different
 than
befoer but the end result was pretty much the same. At the end I was
getting a series of messages for ata5 stating things like failed to set
xfermode then failed to recover some devices, then retrying in 5 sec.
After a few seconds a very similar series but saying something about
limiting UDMA speed to 133 then to 100. The same series appeared for ata6
and after that I got the ATA abnormal exit thing and this was it.

Is my motherboard that peculiar? Anybody else with Abit out there having
 the same or different luck.

Finally (and I am repeating myself), I do not understand WHY CAN I BOOT
 6.10
 just fine???

Thanks for everybody's efforts although the results are very disappointing
for me - it looks like I will be stuck with running Windows for a while.
Any words of wisdom or suggestions will be greatly appreciated,

 Andy

2007-03-28 Thread Björn Torkelsson
James,

That host does not have a FQHN right?

I believe the problem is that the GSSAPI authenticion tries to look up the
hostname
and the timeout problems is from failing that. Which is why it also fails
(sometimes) when ssh:ing to a numeric host address

RE: [Bug 97121] Re: Missing 64bit support for Desktop users

2007-03-28 Thread kranebitt
Dear Mike,
thank you for your detailed and very helpful answer.
I read a lot about the chroot system but it seems to be too messy a
solution.
I found the programme linux32 to be an acceptable solution for some tasks,
but other than that I had to use Automatix, which I found to be something
line satan in the world of Ubuntu-programmers. That is why I am sure that
apps like Skype, Picasa, Google Earth, etc.
could be installed on amd64 environments just like under Automatix:
Easy, fast and clean.
And I hope that will be possible in one of the next versions.

And for general inputs which are not quite bugs, like this one, is there a
different section I could write them in, not to annoy you guys too much, who
have to work and fix real problems?

Thanks again,

Andreas

Andreas,

I understand where you are coming from and I too would appreciate all
these packages working under 64 bit Ubuntu. However I don't think this
qualifies as a bug and here's why. First, there is nothing anyone can
really do about binary packages from other sources like Google or
Adobe. The best we can do is hack them to work on top of a 64bit
environment examples can be found below:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=341727
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=196011

Second, you want Ubuntu to promote 64 bit for its desktop adoption,
however there are no real advantages to using a 64 bit system on the
desktop. server or database yes, desktop no. Other areas will
especially not work like running binary video decoders where there is no
64bit windows equivalent and will never work. If you want to continue
to peruse this I would recommend setting up a chroot environment and
enjoying the best of both worlds.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=24575

 If you download the latest Feisty beta your problem should be solved;
try going to http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current then download
the feisty-desktop-i386.iso and burn it to a CD. This LiveCD should
work. If you don't know how to burn an ISO to a CD, please visit:

 alternatively:

[Bug 71560] Re: Crash information collection depletes resources, clogs up and crashes system

2007-03-28 Thread Alex Mauer
Same here, and it takes a ridiculously huge amount of time to gather
info.

Most recently:

1:10 - Thunderbird crashes; system becomes sluggish.
1:13 - apport reports that thunderbird crashed, offers to report problem.
Accepted; apport begins gathering data and system becomes nearly unresponsive.
1:20 - apport reports that it has finished gathering data and offers to send it
with the report. Accepted. System becomes nearly unresponsive until 1:42.
During this time memory usage of apport-gtk balloons to about 300MB virtual,
181MB resident.
1:42 - system becomes more responsive. apport is still sending data
1:45 - launchpad web page comes up.

How is it anything like acceptable that this application takes 35
minutes to process and report a single crash??

In my opinion even the 3 minutes taken for it to notice an application
problem is unacceptable.

Re: [Bug 96893] Re: [feisty] radeon agp mode defaults to 1

2007-03-28 Thread Jeremy Vies
In your attachment, we can see that:

[ 38.844000] [fglrx] Internal AGP support requested, but kernel AGP
support active.
[ 38.844000] [fglrx] Have to use kernel AGP support to avoid conflicts.
[ 38.844000] [fglrx] AGP detected, AgpState = 0x1f000217 (hardware
caps of chipset)
[ 38.844000] agpgart: Found an AGP 2.0 compliant device at :00:00.0.
[ 38.844000] agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at :00:00.0 into 4x mode
[ 38.844000] agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at :01:00.0 into 4x mode
[ 38.844000] [fglrx] AGP enabled, AgpCommand = 0x1f000314 (selected caps)

So I think that your video card is working in AGP 4x.
(by the way, if I remind well, AGP v2.0 does not support AGP 1x. It
only works in 2x, 4x and 8x)

[Bug 92237] Re: hpijs driver not working in feisty (worked perfectly in edgy)

2007-03-28 Thread MrZehl
My LaserJet 1010 is also not working anymore. I get no errormessage. The status
windows says Job-printing but it doesn't. If I don't cancel the job it will be
in the status Job-printing forever.
With the Update Manager I just got a new foomatic-db-hpijs package. I guess
it's the one from yesterday you are referring to here above. It still doesn't
work.

I installed feisty beta and Update at least once a day.

[Bug 97310] Kernelpanik while opening a usbserial port with Feisty Fawn Beta

2007-03-28 Thread pmarti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-13-generic

Background:

My company is developing an OSS manager for 3G devices. We support several
devices in our product. One of them is a Huawei E620 UMTS card. While with Edgy
we never had a problem whatsoever, with Feisty trying just to open one of the
device's serial ports while result in a kernel panik. This only happens with
this model of card, and randomly. Say 80% of the time I've tried it has
resulted in a kernel panik while the other 20% has worked flawlessly.
I've got to say that this card works perfectly in Windows/OpenSUSE 10.2 and
Edgy so its not hardware fault.

I've experienced the same kernelpaniks with Flight 5 and Beta 1:

Re: [Bug 71560] Re: Crash information collection depletes resources, clogs up and crashes system

2007-03-28 Thread Simon Ruggier
Unacceptable indeed, I worry about this effect this has on the average
user. Sorry to randomly rant, but it really irritates me when
misfeatures like this get into a supported release, both because it
hampers my ability to recommend Ubuntu to others, and because it's so
preventable, it just shouldn't happen.

The fact that you are getting problems when you are starting up rather
than switching VTs suggests that your problem is different to this one.
Please file a separate bug report (your best bet is probably to probably
report your problems to NVIDIA though. See

[Bug 96430] Re: MASTER: Request for new-legacy nvidia drivers (9631)

2007-03-28 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
Same here, todays upgrade installed an nvidia driver kernel module that don't
support my
nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 420 Go 32M]
So I went back to use the nvidia-legacy package. Unfortunately the driver
included with this doesn't support my card properly, I get a garbled screen.
So I fell back to using the nv driver. Which seems to work ok, except for the
fact that X sometime will hog the CPU and needs to be killed with SIGKILL.
Extremely annoying.
We need multiple nvidia-olegacy packages!

[Bug 95241] Re: firefox - the connection was reset - Fiesty

2007-03-28 Thread HMX
I just want to add that the same thing happens on firefox 2.0.0.3.

Curiously though, this problem only appears at my work place.

When using firefox on the same computer from a different network (home)
everything works as expected.

What makes this bug so strange is that there is no firewall or proxy at
work, which could interfere. Maybe there is some strange kernel tcp/ip
router interaction going on here, which is only triggered by gecko based
browsers? Hard to imagine, but I am not an expert...

Does the newest daily fix the problem? If not, I'm going to unmark this

[Bug 97312] Cannot open SCSI driver! while attempting to blank a cdrw (feisty beta)

2007-03-28 Thread Xavier de Pedro
Public bug reported:

Problem arose when using gnomebaker or k3b to blank a CD

I attempted to blank a full CD-RW. I couldn't with the updated feisty beta. I
had no problems with previous versions of ubuntu. Tried with 2 different
rewritable CD's: the same effect.
I could blank that cd as usual on k3b on another machine (running another linux
OS :-/ ).
The text displayed by both CD-managers are:

Gnomebaker:

scsidev: 'ATA:1,0,0'
devname: 'ATA'
scsibus: 1 target: 0 lun: 0
wodim: No such file or directory.
Cannot open SCSI driver!
For possible targets try 'wodim --devices' or 'wodim -scanbus'.
For possible transport specifiers try 'wodim dev=help'.
For IDE/ATAPI devices configuration, see the file README.ATAPI.setup from
the wodim documentation.

[Bug 97314] [apport] qtwengophone crashed with SIGSEGV in QtWengoPhone::setQtWsDirectory()

2007-03-28 Thread hannes.nortje
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wengophone

I had problems from the start with wengophone, it seems like it is not
happy with the port 5060 which seems like it is being used by some other
program. Wengophone just closes when it doesn't like something and then
it is difficult to try and solve problems.

Thank you for your bug. Do you use totem-gstreamer or totem-xine? Could
you run dbus-monitor and note if there is any signal received when totem
is switched to fullscreen mode then?
