Are you sure /usr/bin/logger has never been locally modified? As far as I can
tell /usr/bin/logger has always been an ELF executable.

2010-02-08 Thread ikpetroff
If /usr/bin/logger has always been an ELF executable I guess my version had
been locally modified as you presume.
Unfortunately I don't know how and why it was modified.
What's sure is that my Ubuntu 8.04 has packages from other unofficial sources.

[Bug 497763] Re: Hang during installation

2010-02-08 Thread Luke
I don't have access to my laptop right at this moment, but I can
describe my network setup and I do remember the contents of those files.

I am running bind on my OpenBSD server that also does DNS for my
internal network (with a .int TLD). When I installed Ubuntu it asked
for a machine name, so I gave my laptop the name debussy. When I went
to install apache as described above, it could not resolve debussy so
I changed the files as shown below which allowed the second attempt at
installation to succeed:

/etc/hosts

127.0.0.1debussy.int debussy

/etc/hostname

debussy.int

[Bug 28380] Re: Autofs fails to update /net with new shares from server

2010-02-08 Thread Jesper Krogh
It is really dissapointing .. but there has been posted an awfull lot of
automated crap in this bug, by people who either:

* Didnt read the initial bug or
* Did try out the steps to reproduce

Even though it can be done on any installation, just going ahead using
the five points above.

The problem is (AFAIK) reproducible on any version of Ubuntu going from,
dapper and up til today, since you still ship autofs4 and not autofs5 as
default.

Autofs5 has been released for two years by now.

Sensible answers to this bug would have been stuff like:
* We dont care about autofs, even though we ship it in main
* We cannot reproduce the bug using above steps. (No-one has even claimed that
they have tried so far).
.. and a lot of other constructive feedback.

.. I just tried on Karmic and the problem is still there, allthough it
might have been slightly better, since the problem is only occouring if
someone actively uses the mountpoint.

.. once again (karmic test).

$ sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server autofs
$ edit /etc/auto.master and enable /net
$ sudo /etc/init.d/autofs restart
$ mkdir /tmp/test1 /tmp/test2
$ edit /etc/exports and insert /tmp/test1 *(ro,no_subtree_check)
$ sudo exportfs -a
$ showmount -e localhost
Export list for localhost:
/tmp/test1 *
$ cd /net/localhost/tmp; ls
test1
$ edit /etc/exports and insert /tmp/test2 *(ro,no_subtree_check)
$ sudo exportfs -a
$ sudo /etc/init.d/autofs reload
Reloading automounter: checking for changes ...
Reloading automounter map for: /net
$ ls
test1
$ # Here we should have seen test2 ..
$ ls /net/localhost/tmp/
test1
$ # Here it should have been again.

The fix is to ship autofs5 .. not 4..

4 years, 10 semi-auto generated messages from people systems.. and the
fix is even posted in the comments and still no actions.

Jesper

[Bug 227881] Re: tftpd-hpa does not use /etc/default/tftp-hpa options

2010-02-08 Thread jtk
When I install tftp-hpa in karmic (9.10) installs openbsd-inetd. Both
the startup scripts for these two packages are installed in
/etc/init.d/. However, by default tftp-hpa is set to not run by default
with the RUN_DAEMON=yes set while openbsd-inetd starts up tftpd anyway,
because of its default /etc/inetd.conf. I like the tftp-hpa default
behavior best. If for some reason openbsd-inetd is needed, then, I'd
prefer inetd.conf disable in.tftpd by default.

[Bug 518962] [NEW] ssh client does not forward X11 to local user's networked DISPLAY

2010-02-08 Thread Remi Gauvin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openssh-client

Version: openssh-client 1:5.1p1-ubuntu2 on Ubuntu Karmic (9.10)

This is somewhat of a awkward setup, but used to work with older
versions of Ubuntu.

I work on a X-terminal that connects to my main workstation via XDMCP.
Consequently, my $DISPLAY is:

:::10.0.0.10:1.0

If I then ssh -X usern...@remotehost, and launch a X application (like gedit,
for example)
gedit will not open at my DISPLAY. Rather, gedit will open on the :1 display
of the main workstation.

I was wondering if ssh is getting confused by the ip6 address, but
haven't found a way to force it to IP4 (I can change $DISPLAY by hand
before launching ssh, but then my magic cookie is invalid)

[Bug 504963] Re: [Karmic] host -4 does IPv6 lookup -- times out

2010-02-08 Thread Marcerino
Hi Chuck,

Attached the debug printout from host -D. The first two files
host_before_wait.log and host_all.log are from just running 'host -D
www.google.com, while the file host_minus4*.log are from running host -D -4
www.google.com. In each case, the 'before_wait' file is the log up to the
moment that the program gets temporarily stuck; it waits about half a second
and then later once or twice more. Each time just after printing:
unlock_lookup dighost.c:2145
the full log is in the *all.log files.

Hope this is useful. Let me know if you need more info.

Marco.

[Bug 517067] Re: Using virtio for block devices makes disks and partitions disappear in KVM/QEMU (using vmbuilder and libvirt)

2010-02-08 Thread Andreas Ntaflos
You are right of course, /etc/fstab on the guest contains /dev/sdXY
entries. These get generated by
/usr/share/pyshared/VMBuilder/plugins/ubuntu/feisty.py as you mentioned.
After changing all /dev/sdXY to /dev/vdXY I can indeed boot happily
:)

What threw me off was that QEMU did not (and does not) see these virtio-
based drives when booting (see screenshots) and that changing the target
device name in the domain definition (target dev='vda' bus='virtio'/
to target dev='sda' bus='virtio'/ and vice versa) does nothing. I
suppose this has to do with the snippet of documentation I quoted
previously and probably with the fact that the virtio driver is
paravirtualized so QEMU doesn't do any of the emulation it would do with
IDE- or SCSI-based buses. Should have thought of that earlier.

So creating guests in the manner I described in my original post using
vmbuilder works after applying your one-line fix to
/usr/share/pyshared/VMBuilder/plugins/ubuntu/feisty.py.

I am not sure where this bug lies since I am just getting to know the
more advanced aspects of libvirt but I suppose vmbuider is to blame.
That's understandable given that it is still somewhat young and cannot
consider all possible combinations and varieties of libvirt options. Too
bad virt-install is mostly useless for quickly creating and deploying
guests for testing purposes.

I like your solution b.) but doesn't that add yet another level of
indirection and complicates guest setup even more?

[Bug 176844] Re: ntpdate fails to get a server from /etc/ntp.conf

2010-02-08 Thread Maxim Heijndijk
I clean installed Ubuntu Karmic in october 2009 and just discovered that
my system time is 15 minutes off. I had ntp as well as ntpdate
installed, but it clearly never synchronized. The time and date applet
in the panel doesn't work either. I deinstalled ntp and manually
executed ntpdate ntp.ubuntu.com and the right time was set. So how come
this is not marked as a bug? Is it a feature that Karmic won't update
the time?

[Bug 519119] [NEW] Transitional packages need some reworking

2010-02-08 Thread Andrew Pollock
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autofs

There's a couple of problems with the autofs situation in Lucid at the
moment:

1) autofs5 conflicts with autofs, making the dummy package uninstallable
after it gets displaced (not that you really want to install it, but you
get a hideous error when you try)

2) the extra autofs(4)-related packages in universe need to become
dummy packages as well. Right now, it's possible to have autofs5
installed with autofs-ldap, and that doesn't produce the desired
outcome.

[Bug 518705] [NEW] 9.10 - Toshiba Satellite L30-113 freezes when on battery power, when AC is plugged out

2010-02-08 Thread MapHtH
Public bug reported:

I think that this has something to do with the kernel. I'm using the
Ubuntu 2.6.31-19 Kernel. I keep my battery out of the laptop to preserve
it. I plugged it in a few days back, and I noticed that Ubuntu won't
boot. It either hangs on boot loading screen, or enters the UI and hangs
there. When it enters the Gnome UI, I can't move the cursor, nothing
responds, I have to forcefully shut it down. One guy had a similar
problem, as I found via google (http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-
b...@lists.ubuntu.com/msg1966386.html), and he solved it by installing
(at that time) the newest kernel update. This is very irritating as the
battery can't be used at all.

Thanks for help

[Bug 509509] Re: non-default color theme corrupted after gnome-settings-daemon restart

2010-02-08 Thread marmuta
Similar things happen here with gnome-terminal 2.29.1-0ubuntu3 when
switching themes. Only the the terminals background color seems affected
though. Switching from Human to DarkRoom gives a DarkRoom-brown
background color #4C4039, switching back to Human makes it an unreadable
(white text on) light-grey #E6DDD5. Apparently gnome-terminal applies
the themes window color for the background despite being told not to,
i.e. having Use colors from system theme unchecked.

[Bug 518709] [NEW] Missing shared library for GHC-HDBC-Sqlite3

2010-02-08 Thread Federico Zenith

[Bug 518711] [NEW] [needs-packaging] opentracker

2010-02-08 Thread sputnik
Public bug reported:

Opentracker is the most professional bittorrent tracker available. It
has been used as option of choice for example by thepiratebay.org. But
also has use cases in other business or home environments. The biggest
feature is it's performance and low CPU usage - best credits for a
professional server!

See english Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opentracker
Homepage, Build instructions: http://erdgeist.org/arts/software/opentracker/

License: Opentracker is Beerware.
Therefore free to package - and with a twinkle to use. (Beerware description
from en.wikipedia:
Should the user of the product meet the author and consider the software
useful, he is encouraged to buy the author a beer 'in return' (or, in some
variations, drink a beer in the author's honor).

opentracker just needs libowfat which is a promising library. (

Re: [Bug 506816] Re: wl missing after Karmic - Lucid upgrade

2010-02-08 Thread Martin Pitt
Mario Limonciello [2010-02-07 18:07 -]:
 Has this behavior changed in the arguments provided to the /etc/kernel/*
 scripts? It looks like it's being called with
 '/boot/vmlinux-2.6.32-12-generic' rather than '2.6.32-12-generic', where the
 later is what is expected (and what was used in previous distro iterations).

I can't tell whether it changed, but perhaps dkms should run the
argumment through basename for more robustness?

[Bug 473615] Re: cryptsetup init scripts are redundant and can break the boot

2010-02-08 Thread Sven 'Darkman' Michels
Hi,

i've the same issue which is driving me nuts actually.

Setup is Ubuntu 9.10 with /home and swap encrypted (setup since 6.10 or so,
can't remeber exactly when i added it). It worked fine till 9.10, then the
insane problems started. It sometimes work (e.g. i can enter the passphrase at
boot) but mostly i'm unable to boot
my maschine since the boot process just hangs.

Today, the problem even got worse. I updated my box today, which
installed a new kernel, so i had to reboot. Interesting thing is, that
last time i rebooted (28th Jan iirc) i got prompted for my passphrase at
the gui (i think its upsplash) and all worked fine. So i thought the
Problem is gone. Today, nothing(!) works. In the past, a few reboots
made it work from now and then and i accepted the workaround. Today,
even 20 times of booting made it impossible to enter a passphrase at
all. The upsplash only shows that one or more devices (/home in this
case) failed to mount and offers me a rescue console when pressing ESC.
This console works for, lets say a minute or two, after that, next to 0
keystrokes made it to the console. A few times i saw output from
cryptosetup which seems to get my rootpassword (when entering the
rescue console, it asks for the root password, but the keystrokes seems
to get to cryptsetup, but only a few/sometimes...) and thus still fails
to boot. If i try to enter my cryptodisk password, i got a failed login,
so i don't know when i'm able to enter what ;)

After a few workarounds etc. i found, still nothing worked. The workarounds i
tried: bootwait to mountpoint, removed splash from the kernelparameters,
trying to switch to a non gui runlevel... so the good old
/etc/init.d/cryptodisks restart mount /home gave me back my home (i just
have to be quick enough) and with crtl + d the boot process continues
normally... and voila,
here i am...

So for me, the new version of cryptsetup seems to made it better in the
first (reboot of 28th january worked fine), but something after that
made it even worse. The following packages where installed since 28th
jan:

hal 0.5.13-1ubuntu8

Are you sure /usr/bin/logger has never been locally modified? As far as I can
tell /usr/bin/logger has always been an ELF executable.

[Bug 518719] [NEW] Spaces and special characters in filenames

2010-02-08 Thread Martinux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

Hi,

When the filename contains a space, the code %20 is printed instead.
I think we will have the same issues for accentuated and national characters.

This is not very pretty and meaningful, specially for non IT users...

Also, I think that the file:// protocal prefix is useless.

May be, all this this was done to allow opening the file in a document
url, but I think that it should be only an option, if really useful.

In my mind, the most efficient would be to print only the filename, not
the directory names. Most people simply identify their images like this,
and would be happy to see only this printed. In fact, the path relative
to the directory entered would be the best.

Do not forget dummies !
Thanks for them.

[Bug 381275] Re: Rhythmbox connection to Xbox360 drops

2010-02-08 Thread Cam Cope
This is still an issue in 9.10, and it's probably due to a bug in
Coherence. There's a commit in the upstream changelog that mentions a
fix for the Xbox that is dated 10/25/2009:
http://coherence.beebits.net/browser/trunk/Coherence/ChangeLog
