[Bug 523188] Re: Make it possible again to let dhcp server set the client hostname

2010-03-12 Thread Valentijn Sessink
We are perfectly able to set hostnames in Karmic; however, we have
/etc/hostname explicitly set to '(none)', while (as far as I see in
other reports), since Karmic, when /etc/hostname is missing, Ubuntu sets
it to localhost, thus making dhclient not set the hostname.

We have set /etc/hostname explicitly to '(none)'. Naturally, this is an
illegal hostname, but since we use dhcp for our hostnames, the hostname
is changed once the network is up.

[Bug 537978] [NEW] Lucid dhclient can't set hostname

2010-03-12 Thread Valentijn Sessink
Public bug reported:

Until recently (up to and including Karmic), there was a set_hostname()
function in /sbin/dhclient-script, that said:
set_hostname() {
local current_hostname=$(hostname)
if [ -z $current_hostname -o $current_hostname = (none) ]; then
hostname $new_host_name
fi
}

Up to 9.04, this would work when there was no /etc/hostname. With 9.10
(Karmic), this changed: a missing /etc/hostname sets the hostname to
localhost and the dhclient-script will no longer set the hostname:
this bug is reported as bug #482313 and bug #523188 - see bug #482313
for the fix we have been using for years.

Now with Lucid, the whole thing goes wrong, as the set_hostname() function is
missing. There's only:
BOUND|RENEW|REBIND|REBOOT)
if [ -n $old_host_name -a -n $host_name -a \
 $host_name != $old_host_name ]; then
hostname $new_host_name
fi

This is plain wrong for two reasons:
1) as far as I can see, the $host_name variable does not exist at all; there's
only an old_host_name and a new_host_name, but host_name does not exist -
which means the test will never be true.
2) if the test would be true at all, it would still only change the hostname if
there is a change in the *dhcp-server supplied hostname*, i.e. if the hostname
used to be foo and suddenly, the dhcp-server sends a hostname bar, then the
hostname will change.

This is also against the dhclient documentation, see man dhcp-options:
option host-name string;
This option specifies the name of the client. The name may or may
not be qualified with the local domain name (it is preferable to use
the domain-name option to specify the domain name). See RFC 1035
for character set restrictions. This option is only honored by
dhclient-script(8) if the hostname for the client machine is not
  set.

This is no longer true: under Lucid, the hostname will not be set at
all, no matter what you try to do.

Arnaud Quette [2010-03-10 10:51 -]:
as a side note, I have a 2.4.3-2 underway which solves the bull**it
introduced by Scott James for refreshing the USB bus on postinst...
The result is that any USB user has to unplug / plug back his UPS' USB
cord to get udev apply the right rules.
 ie, in nut.postint:
 udevadm trigger --action=change
 should be replaced by
 udevadm trigger --subsystem-match=usb

Please replace it with

  udevadm trigger --subsystem-match=usb --action=change

Please do not *ever* add an udevadm trigger to a postinst with an
action other than change. This will break a lot of boxes really
really hard.

Thanks!

As I am still interested in finding a solution to this I would very much like

am supposed to reproduce he failure with a live cd as the malfunction occurs
during startup and I seriously don't want to engineer a live cd in order to

As described above there is no problem if you do it manually after startup...
Any suggestions on that?

[Bug 157608] Re: Adjust Time - Sync with Internet Time Servers never syncs.

2010-03-12 Thread chrone
i confirm this bug is still here with ubuntu 8.04.4 server i386 with the
latest update up to this date. i use bind9 to my dns set to 127.0.0.1
and i use static ip address in the /etc/network/interfaces on eth0.

i believe by the time the ntp daemon tried to connect to ntp.ubuntu.com,
it could not resolve the server, thus it failed and produced this line
when executed ntpq -d: No association ID's returned. perhaps the ntp
got loaded first than the network interface and bind9 services.

[Bug 538178] [NEW] MySQL crashes after I run sudo apt-get upgrade

2010-03-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi All,

I'm using a 64-bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 server on an Amazon EC2
instance. Since a couple weeks ago, sudo apt-get upgrade has failed
because it can't upgrade MySQL successfully. When I run apt-get
upgrade, the server downloads the latest MySQL files and stops the MySQL
daemon in order to upgrade the server. But then it fails when trying to
start MySQL.

When I investigated the cause of this error, I realized that the cause
of the problem is that the sudo apt-get upgrade creates 2 binary log
files which have the root:root account and group as the owner. These
binary log files are in the directory /var/lib/mysql/ and have names
like mysql-bin.000107. I'm not sure why sudo apt-get upgrade creates
2 files, but it always seems to create 2 files. When I change the owner
of these binary log files to mysql:mysql, then MySQL successfully
starts.

As a result of this bug, I haven't been able to successfully run sudo
apt-get upgrade for a couple weeks. Any help or advice would be
appreciated!

Here is info about my server.

[Bug 519897] Re: [armel] squid FTBFS: cf_gen Segmentation fault

2010-03-12 Thread David Sugar
Building squid still crashes with current gcc on armel, and I do not
have the root cause yet. Although I do not know if we want to do this,
I did a small change for debian/rules to build with -O0 for arm, and
this at least does work, as Loic noted much earlier. So I have attached
it here.

[Bug 522185] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.37-1ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2010-03-12 Thread David Park
I'm writing to add some more details re: this bug. I encountered the
same problem and figured out what the apt-get upgrade command did that
made the mysql upgrade fail.

I'm using a 64-bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 server on an Amazon EC2
instance. Since a couple weeks ago, sudo apt-get upgrade has failed
because it can't upgrade MySQL successfully. When I run apt-get upgrade,
the server downloads the latest MySQL files and stops the MySQL daemon
in order to upgrade the server. But then it fails when trying to start
MySQL.

I'm not sure why sudo apt-get upgrade creates 2
files, but it always seems to create 2 files. When I change the owner of
these binary log files to mysql:mysql, then MySQL successfully starts.

As a result of this bug, I haven't been able to successfully run sudo
apt-get upgrade for a couple weeks. Any help or advice would be
appreciated!

2010-03-12 Thread LaMont Jones
the package also assumes that you are using /etc/bind, /var/cache/bind,

How many things should we allow you to change before we can no longer
manage the package with the maintainer's idea of where things live??

What's the precise use case that leads you to not have anything matching
/etc/bind/named.conf* ?

the standard one, I'll try and remember to redo this test using the

[Bug 522185] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.37-1ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2010-03-12 Thread Fisher90
I used the instructions that Sinquin David posted, and that seemed to
work.

There were a few files in the /var/lib/mysql that were not owned by
mysql - after doing the process, all the files were mysql mysql for
owner and group. The file I was concerned with was the debian-5.1.flag
file.

Is it possible the MySQL deamon did not have access to the flag file,
and this was causing the problem? I could not get MySQL to stop, so the
update never got very far. After the hard shutdown, clean shutdown, then
update, everything seems fine. MySQL now starts and stops normally as
well.

2010-03-12 Thread Jeremy Allison
The reason the sharename is lowercased is so we can tell immediately if
another usershare exists using a case-variant of the same name (SMB
shares are case insensitive). In order to fix this (it's not an issue in
the server code as far as I can see) the usershare creation code would
have to scan the entire directory to look for case-differing versions of
the new sharename, and replace them if needed.

Jeremy.

[Bug 504737] [NEW] Poor performance for mounted SMB (windows) shares.

2010-03-12 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When accessing this share from nautilus by typing SMB://server/share :
copy a 2GB file: Speed: 50MB/s (38sec to get a 2GB file).

then I mount it using mount -t CIFS //server/share -o ...
copy a 2GB file: Speed: 22,3MB/s (1minute 25sec per 2GB)

mounted partition is very slow compared to the nautilus does it ...

This applies to any share/file on my network.

I do not know what package it is in, but here is what I have installed:
libsmbclient
libwbclient0
nautilus-share
python-smbc
samba-common
samba-common-bin
smbclient
winbind

[Bug 537898] Re: 显卡驱动无效

2010-03-12 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. I noticed that some of the sentences in this bug report are not in
English. If they were translated to English they would be accessible to more
triagers. Could you please translate them?
I am re-assigning this to xorg task for now. Rough translation is : Graphics
driver is invalid - Video card driver is invalid, I use the Asus k40ab. Video
card driver installation is not valid

Are you using the ati proprietary driver or the fglrx driver from hardware
drivers (jockey)? Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.
Please include the information requested at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingXAutoconfiguration as separate
attachments.
Also, please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting to see if this
helps to resolve your issue. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 206952] Re: suspend only works once

2010-03-12 Thread hansvschoot
CutDaMuzik: nice to hear i'm not the only one with this strange behavior. what
kind of hardware are you running? have you tried your usb mouse on another usb
port? i get multiple suspends if the mouse is connected on some of the usb
ports, but not if its connected to the others. (the plugging outin trick works
on all ports here, but can be avoided by finding the right usb port)
This problem happens to me on an Zotac ION board, nvidia chipset. i should also
mention that i'm running the karmic installation from a USB drive. (not a live
usb stick, but a normal installation)
I can do the scripting, but i don't know how and/or what usb modules to
load/unload...

Re: [Bug 314661] Re: [Hardy] NFSv4 server is broken, causes spurious sequence id errors

2010-03-12 Thread magi
I am no longer running hardy on my server so I cannot test if this bug
has been resolved. My work-around was to upgrade hardy to intrepid.

 Hi Andreas,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
 available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
 Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 314661

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
 results.

 Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 537907] Re: GCONF_SCHEMA_FILE_DIR incorrect in gconf-2.m4

2010-03-12 Thread Nicholas J Kreucher
Actually, since the m4 macro will be included in aclocal.m4 (or the
like) in developers distributing source tarballs from Ubuntu, this is
pretty ugly... as the default is probably correct for other distros
(/etc/gconf/schemas vs /usr/share/gconf/schemas). So, I'm not sure what
the fix is... perhaps some m4 logic to detect the correct location?

Seems a shame to have to always pass --with-gconf-schema-file-
dir=/usr/share/gconf/schemas when compiling on Ubuntu.
