We are perfectly able to set hostnames in Karmic; however, we have /etc/hostname explicitly set to '(none)', while (as far as I see in other reports), since Karmic, when /etc/hostname is missing, Ubuntu sets it to localhost, thus making dhclient not set the hostname. -- Make it possible again to let dhcp server set the client hostname https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/523188 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to dhcp3 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 537978] [NEW] Lucid dhclient can't set hostname
Public bug reported: Until recently (up to and including Karmic), there was a set_hostname() function in /sbin/dhclient-script, that said: set_hostname() { local current_hostname=$(hostname) if [ -z $current_hostname -o $current_hostname = (none) ]; then hostname $new_host_name fi } Up to 9.04, this would work when there was no /etc/hostname. With 9.10 (Karmic), this changed: a missing /etc/hostname sets the hostname to localhost and the dhclient-script will no longer set the hostname: this bug is reported as bug #482313 and bug #523188 - see bug #482313 for the fix we have been using for years. Now with Lucid, the whole thing goes wrong, as the set_hostname() function is missing. There's only: BOUND|RENEW|REBIND|REBOOT) if [ -n $old_host_name -a -n $host_name -a \ $host_name != $old_host_name ]; then hostname $new_host_name fi This is plain wrong for two reasons: 1) as far as I can see, the $host_name variable does not exist at all; there's only an old_host_name and a new_host_name, but host_name does not exist - which means the test will never be true. 2) if the test would be true at all, it would still only change the hostname if there is a change in the *dhcp-server supplied hostname*, i.e. if the hostname used to be foo and suddenly, the dhcp-server sends a hostname bar, then the hostname will change. This is also against the dhclient documentation, see man dhcp-options: option host-name string; This option specifies the name of the client. The name may or may not be qualified with the local domain name (it is preferable to use the domain-name option to specify the domain name). See RFC 1035 for character set restrictions. This option is only honored by dhclient-script(8) if the hostname for the client machine is not set. This is no longer true: under Lucid, the hostname will not be set at all, no matter what you try to do. ** Affects: dhcp3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Until recently (up to and including Karmic), there was a set_hostname() function in /sbin/dhclient-script, that said: set_hostname() { - local current_hostname=$(hostname) - if [ -z $current_hostname -o $current_hostname = (none) ]; then - hostname $new_host_name - fi + local current_hostname=$(hostname) + if [ -z $current_hostname -o $current_hostname = (none) ]; then + hostname $new_host_name + fi } Up to 9.04, this would work when there was no /etc/hostname. [Bug 538178] [NEW] MySQL crashes after I run sudo apt-get upgrade
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Hi All, I'm using a 64-bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 server on an Amazon EC2 instance. Since a couple weeks ago, sudo apt-get upgrade has failed because it can't upgrade MySQL successfully. When I run apt-get upgrade, the server downloads the latest MySQL files and stops the MySQL daemon in order to upgrade the server. But then it fails when trying to start MySQL. When I investigated the cause of this error, I realized that the cause of the problem is that the sudo apt-get upgrade creates 2 binary log files which have the root:root account and group as the owner. These binary log files are in the directory /var/lib/mysql/ and have names like mysql-bin.000107. I'm not sure why sudo apt-get upgrade creates 2 files, but it always seems to create 2 files. When I change the owner of these binary log files to mysql:mysql, then MySQL successfully starts. [Bug 522185] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.37-1ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
I'm writing to add some more details re: this bug. I encountered the same problem and figured out what the apt-get upgrade command did that made the mysql upgrade fail. I'm using a 64-bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 server on an Amazon EC2 instance. As a result of this bug, I haven't been able to successfully run sudo apt-get upgrade for a couple weeks. Any help or advice would be appreciated! Here is info about my server. [Bug 522185] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.37-1ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
I used the instructions that Sinquin David posted, and that seemed to work. There were a few files in the /var/lib/mysql that were not owned by mysql - after doing the process, all the files were mysql mysql for owner and group. The file I was concerned with was the debian-5.1.flag file. Is it possible the MySQL deamon did not have access to the flag file, and this was causing the problem? I could not get MySQL to stop, so the update never got very far. After the hard shutdown, clean shutdown, then update, everything seems fine. MySQL now starts and stops normally as well. -- package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.37-1ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/522185 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to mysql-dfsg-5.1 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 222734] Re: Samba usershares in lower-case
The reason the sharename is lowercased is so we can tell immediately if another usershare exists using a case-variant of the same name (SMB shares are case insensitive). [Bug 206952] Re: suspend only works once
CutDaMuzik: nice to hear i'm not the only one with this strange behavior. what kind of hardware are you running? have you tried your usb mouse on another usb port? i get multiple suspends if the mouse is connected on some of the usb ports, but not if its connected to the others. (the plugging outin trick works on all ports here, but can be avoided by finding the right usb port) This problem happens to me on an Zotac ION board, nvidia chipset. i should also mention that i'm running the karmic installation from a USB drive. Re: [Bug 314661] Re: [Hardy] NFSv4 server is broken, causes spurious sequence id errors
I am no longer running hardy on my server so I cannot test if this bug has been resolved. My work-around was to upgrade hardy to intrepid. Magnus Jeremy Foshee wrote: Hi Andreas, This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid. If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux 314661 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. [Bug 537907] Re: GCONF_SCHEMA_FILE_DIR incorrect in gconf-2.m4
Actually, since the m4 macro will be included in aclocal.m4 (or the like) in developers distributing source tarballs from Ubuntu, this is pretty ugly... as the default is probably correct for other distros (/etc/gconf/schemas vs /usr/share/gconf/schemas). So, I'm not sure what the fix is... perhaps some m4 logic to detect the correct location?
